Getting back in to horse riding weekend away, Kent

Hi All, maybe an unusual question but looking to get back in to horse riding. I used to be a pretty ok rider. I was never going to win the “Longines Championship” but I was popping some nice courses. XDH was not in to horses so given it all up. Got divorced about 3 years ago. DD2 has been riding for a few years. We have s nice 15.1h however DD is ready to move on to something that can jump that bit bigger. Would dream about selling DHorse so I would like to get back on to riding. If I never see another fence again then great! I just want to be a happy hacker.

I have been through a few turbulent years and now that things have settled I would like to treat myself to a weekend away somewhere I can get back in to horses. A bit of a riding weekend. I don’t even know if theses places exist. Any advice or recommendations greatly appreciated. Ideally not to far away. Kent would be great. Thank you ever so much!!

Oh - I saw advertised recently someone who has a simulator I'm Kent - it wa son an article about position....., might be worth a look, alongside time on an actual real horse

Sparrow oast- maybe too dressage-y?

FluffyComet · 02/02/2019 20:46

Thank you. Will have a look but dressage has never really been my bag.

Ford farm in the new forest. Some nice pubs nearby to stay in and great hacking .

There are a few places in the new forest, or if you fancy a flight castle leslie in the Republic of Ireland has nice hacking, cross country, nice hotel, a variety of estate horses and will make up a riding package to contain whatever you like. You can even book a room and a stable but from where you are taking the horse might be a bit much.

Given that your goal is to ride DHorse I think your money would be better spent going to a good RC to have an assessment lesson and seeing what you need in terms of lessons to get you up to speed for riding DHorse. Does your DD have an instructor who knows DHorse? She’d be the ideal person to assess you as she’ll have DHorse in mind.

There are loads of weekend away options to get you back in the swing of things. I'm guessing you can walk trot & canter?

If you want to just hack, I can recommend Caeiago riding holidays. You will need to be able to ride in all three paces, but the canters are nice and controlled and relatively short. Lovely horses and people, and stunning scenery. I went with a friend who was competent but needed a confidence boost and they were fab. (I can also massively recommend TransWales, but you definitely need to be more confident & competent for their trips, but they are fantastic)

If you need some schooling too, then some riding schools do residentials, but I don't know of any to recommend. The only one I do know of is Jill Carenza's place in the Cotswolds. I've never been, but have met some people who rode there and they were all a bit "Hooray Henry" so that put me off. Probably a bit unfair of me though...
