The ex racer I've been riding who I've never been able to hack out alone, hacked out alone yeaterday!! I've been wondering if we'd ever be able to manage it! He's brilliant following another horse, or even with someone on the ground to follow, but if it's just me he naps and generally plays me for a fool. It wasn't all plain sailing.. I had to use a crop to get him past the area on the lane he usually naps at, but after that he was much more responsive and I got him past a few sticky bits with just my leg and voice. Once we got off the road and on to the bridleway he tried to turn for home a couple of times, and got a bit spooky at a few dogs walking (thankfully the owners were considerate and picked them up or held them still to let us pass) but I was more confident with him, knowing we'd got through the worst bit.

I'm feeling much happier now I know we can do it. He's such a lovely boy and I love riding him out with company but now I now if I need to ride him out alone that I can do it. Just wanted to share somewhere Smile

Well done! I would never own anything but an ex racer now. Once you crack them they are the most rewarding, willing to please horses out there, just a bit institutionalised

Well done. Best thing for a horse is to learn to hack alone. It gives them a much more secure future if they change hands.

Well done! Lots of us understand how utterly nerve-wracking this can be when your horse has form for not hacking alone!

Brilliant! It is so good and gives you so much more confidence moving forwards to know you can encounter issues and ride through them. Onwards and upwards? What are your plans for him in the future?

Thanks all 😊 he's not my horse, he belongs to a friend of mine but she runs her own business so he's been out of regular work for a while. I've been riding him since the summer with various degrees of success. It had been several years since I'd ridden and he has been testing me for sure! My only plan for now is just to be able to hack him safely and happily. I'm going to do some lessons separately too as my riding definitely needs improving!
