DS has seriously outgrown his horse

DHorse is 15.2 and DS was 14 and 5ft when he started riding him, hes now 16 and 6ft and desperately needs a bigger model.

I now have to start the search process - I hate horse buying and selling.! am all over the dodgy dealer FB sites so know who to avoid ( though they seem to advertise the most perfect horses) and have alerts set up on horse gossip etc.

Emailed round all the local pony clubs as well.

Dreading the whole process.

I totally understand. I ended up with a youngster because I was so fed up with pretentious adverts for less than average horses. All up for silly prices may I add!

And don't get me started on the "timewaster" adverts! 🤨

I ended up buying a specific breed from someone who has a good reputation within the breed society, but he's only 4, so we've got a long road ahead.

What type are you looking for?

Backinthebox · 09/08/2018 22:15

Don't even talk about this! DS is rapidly growing out of our much loved 11.2 who we've had for 7 years. Both kids have been at PC camp this week and look under horsed. I predict that next year DS will be on his sister's 14hh, and DD will be on my horse. Only if she promises to ride him forward though - she has the most deadening riding style going. I predict this ability to turn the spriteliest of ponies into steady dobbins will be a valuable talent when I am much older, but for now I want my horse to go faster than a stilted walk!

OP what discipline does your ds do and what kind of horse are you after? Maybe someone on here will know of one?

DrunkenUnicorn · 12/08/2018 19:53

We are in the same spot but possibly worse!

Ds is 14, almost 15. We’ve had pony for five years in September. Pony of a lifetime.

Pony has stayed 14.2 throughout... ds has gone from just over 5’ to 6’2 and a half!Shock

Thankfully he’s beanpole thin (anyone know where I can get 28’ waist/ 36’ leg jodhpurs?!) and pony is super wide, but recently he has actually started to concede he’s too tall. Thankfully he’s still about 9 3/4 stone so not too heavy. He’d been in denial for the past few months.

It’s so so sad. I feel like they’re just getting better and better together, that they’re noway finished their journey, they’re barely started.

Do you have to see current pony before you can get another? How does your ds feel?

Eve · 13/08/2018 09:57

its horrid isn't it?

I do need to sell current horse, but got 2 potential word of mouth buyers who are interested in him.

He should sell as he took DS2 from into to elementary and to 3 riding club nationals, hes incredibly easy to look after and hacks brilliantly. So would be perfect for a dressage child or an older lady wanting to do riding club.

DS has missed eventing though and so looking for a 16h all rounder that will low level event! those are pricy! DS knows he's getting too big and heavy for current horse.

I am always 100% honest selling, once had a buyer walk away from a pony who would have been prefect for their daughter, saying if you are telling us all this, what aren't you telling us.... ( she did sell the next day to someone I knew!)

OP I don't l know what part of the country you are in but look on Facebook for GHF equestrian based in Monmouthshire. Good honest dealers selling young future event horses and often know of ones that need homes that they have previously sold.

Frouby · 15/08/2018 07:18

It's so hard isn't it. I have a little section A that was dds pony for ds who is 4 and dd and I are sharing my highland now.

Trouble is even at 4 ds is tall, I can see him being too tall for a dinky A by the time he 8, but still too little for the highland and I really don't want a 13hh as I struggle to sell.

And whereas I always knew dd wouldnt ride seriously and she had 2 years off riding her own pony and was happy with riding school lessons ds is as keen as mustard and has been since he was 18 months old.

Cariadxx · 15/08/2018 12:58

My section A is 7 so when baby is born next year she should last it until aged about 10 as she's about 11/11.2h but VERY wide, I ride her and can't reach the floor at 5'6. If we have a second child they'll ride her too so she'll have a job for the next 12-14 years.

Booboostwo · 16/08/2018 16:54

Sounds like you are looking for a low level competitions horse. For that I would go direct to professional breeders, not your usual 3,000 amazing confidence giver horses liar, but a professional rider who deals in a small number of quality competition horses and has a reputation to protect.

DrunkenUnicorn · 06/09/2018 19:48

Eve, how are you getting on?

Ds seems to have grown even more in the last few weeks! Sad I was hoping to hold out till spring but not sure it’s going to work... Sad
