Insurance for 15 year old horse

What company would you recommend or not?

Feels like a minefield.

I have owned him for a couple of months. We have BHS gold membership for public liability etc.

I wasn't going to insure him and save monthly instead. However he has turned out to be rather a superstar and I am feeling less pragmatic about his old age and vets bills! He passed a 5 stage vetting with flying colours.

Any thoughts?

I use petplan for mine but she is only 5 so not sure on older ponies.

If you go on the price comparison sites you can work out roughly who will and wont insure. Check what age the policy will run to and if there are any age related exclusions.

It won't be cheap. Dpony is 5, a native breed and we don't do anything beyond local shows. She is covered for death and vets fees up to 3.5k and it's £420 for the year.

I don't have insurance for the dcs pony. He is lovely. But a section A, 11 years old and his value is minimal to anyone except us. If he got an illness or injury that meant thousands of pounds of treatment I would have to think very long and hard before proceeding. Mainly because I had a previous kids pony operated on and the weeks of box rest and so on blew her brains.

I would think the same about dpony that is insured too though she is more for me and a different temperament and would cope better I think. And I would struggle financially to replace her.

I am tempted on seeing her renewal quote this year to keep a credit card with 3.5k on it instead. I pay £20 a month to our vet anyway to cover any unexpected bills and.keep a balance of around £400 with them. They have been my vets for 15 years though so I have a.good relationship and have paid some big bills off by paying monthly so there is a relationship there.

My 17 year old is with KBIS - not the cheapest but pretty good and pay up without a murmur. I have a mid-20s who is now with Scottish Equestrian as they were one of the very few prepared to cover illness as well as accident, but it is now so expensive to cover an oldie for illness that I've gone down the route of accident-only cover.

I have my 15 year old insured with horse insurance .co.uk, which since starting a claim for arthritis I have realised are part of e&l - which have a terrible reputation. So far they have asked me for a full copy of his passport so they can contact all the vets he's ever seen, and asked me to obtain a copy of the medical notes from vet that referred us on to where he was diagnosed/treated. I have supplied this and waiting to hear back.
A friend went with pet plan for her 16yo he was diagnosed with ringbone and then tragically died of colic a few months later, they paid for the treatment for both and his full insured value despite the ringbone. They're expensive though.

I had my 16 year old insured with nfu and they were brilliant when he was diagnosed with arthritis in both fronts. Expensive though. I have two currently insured with them and it's 110 a month!

Our 18 year old is with PetPlan - £47 a month I think

I wanted illness cover as well as injury, rider, liability, etc, etc

Plus, our vets will do direct pay with PetPlan, a lot (e&l, horse insurance.co.uk) they won’t touch as they take too long to pay out

My horse isn't old but I can't recommend PetPlan enough. They have paid out 3 claims this year, all maxed out, with not a single quibble. This includes 2 claims that they could have argued were related to the same incident (and therefore only allowed on a single claim).

For my renewal, they added a number of exclusions that were unfair (based on lazy language in vet reports) so my vet wrote to them and they took them all off, again, no quibbling.
