What are you feeding your horses?

With the grass this dry etc, are you feeding too?
My mare is quite fat but to me her paddock looks bare and dry. She has a supplement to help with seasons and so i feed her this with some organic chopped grass. I give her a big double handful each evening. She is out full time and hacked on 4/5 days per week.
What are you feeding?

Mine is out approx 15 hours a day, there's a reasonable amount grass in the field although its dry and brown/green. He gets 3/4 of a scoop of Top Spec Top Chop Grass, a 1/3 of a scoop of Top Spec conditioning cubes and 1/2 a portion of their balancer twice a day, he has a small haynet, about 2.5 kg, to pick at during the day but I doubt he eats more than a 1.5 kg in a day. He's looks well but is not definitely not over weight you can just see the shadow his ribs but he is holding his weight. He's currently in light work due to an injury.
I think I would be feeding some sort of vitamin supplement if I was you as there is nothing in the grass.

Hay.

Jamforlunch · 28/07/2018 17:38

Just hay here. Condition is good, hooves are fine. Hay and a salt lick.

t3xa · 28/07/2018 17:45

Out 24/7, on very short grass (fatty was starting to live up to his name!). No hay, but they each get a handful of coarse mix while I check fly rugs and do their feet

Gabilan · 28/07/2018 19:06

Mine's retired. He has a food balancer, with a little bit of unmolassed chaff to make sure he chews it. He's out overnight for around 12-16 hours and in during the day. The grass is short and parched but he's not working and lives on air. He has a small haynet when he's in and shares a small amount of hay with his field mates. He's maintaining his weight and although I recognise the problem with the weather, the silver lining* for me is that he's not getting fat. He is a good doer and the vet wants his weight down because he is retired due to lameness.

  • not really an appropriate metaphor, but I couldn't think of another.

I'm feeding my 4 year old dales pony a handful of Thunderbrook herbal chaff with one scoop of Thunderbrook daily essentials. He gets this once a day. He gets one small hay net and a salt lick in the stable. He's out overnight and comes in during the day.

Five year old ID. Top Spec Balancer Complete, and Alfa A.

His paddock is short and dry, but the sugars are low down and the grass is stressed, hence them not really losing much if any weight. When he's in he's not bothered about the hay.

AlphaBites · 30/07/2018 00:01

Nowt, they are both quite rotund as it is!

numptynuts · 30/07/2018 00:12

25yr old and 3yr old Irish cobs. Out 24/7. Grass albeit brown and Handful of fast fibre a day with garlic, linseed and occasional salt plus 25yr old has additional vetrofen and glucosamine as she's an old lady.

Kr250710 · 30/07/2018 07:22

Mine are out during day and in at night. Paddock is dry, brown grass although looks greenish at roots.

Welsh cob has a muzzle on during the day. 3 sections of soaked hay overnight. Handful fast fibre soaked for dinner and a salt lick. He is in light work mainly hacking and literally lives on fresh air! Currently looking extremely well and all above is on recommendations of vet and feed specialist.

WB x appaloosa is out during day. 3 sections of hay overnight. Our hay changes so if it looks particularly green I soak it. He gets third of a scoop fast fibre split between breakfast and dinner. Again as recommended. He is also well at the moment although I keep a very close eye on his weight and adjust if necessary.

X

I have a two year old that is growing, again!

There doesn't seem to be an awful lot of grass in his field and he has been field hopping to find some - much to the annoyance of the other liveries.

I have upped his feed by adding some fast fibre to his diet. So he gets 1 scoop FF, balancer, linseed, salt and half scoop hi fi twice a day, plus as much hay as he can eat. He's also been staying in at night, so he goes out with a full tummy and hopefully, is not too hungry. Seems to be working as he's stayed in his field for two weeks. He also has hay in the field. I have just moved him across to the other side of his field which has been rested, hopefully he has stayed put today!

WhyDidIEatThat · 31/07/2018 07:32

Out at night, in during day. Sporty cob (sec. D) has racing mix to rev her up a bit and haylage, IDxTB horse has lo-cal balancer (baileys no.14) and hay.

DraughtyWindow · 31/07/2018 11:49

13.2 in during the day (with ad-lib hay) and out at night, 2 feeds a day of Agrobs Mash, linseed, Equinox balancer & salt. But she’s in full work (6 days a week) and has maintained her correct weight all summer so far. I weight tape her every two weeks! If she’s looking podgy I just reduce the feed quantity slightly. She always gets less on her days off.

butcherswife · 03/08/2018 13:55

My cob is on a cup of topspec lite balancer and a handful of top chop lite. She is in light work as is fairly young. Our fields are like dust at the moment, they never really recovered from winter so we are feeding a small net of haylage morning and night too.

She is turned out 24/7 all year and we weight tape regularly too and she stays the same give or take a couple of cm's all year.

britnay · 03/08/2018 19:06

nothing! he is muzzled and still a porker!

Fireinthegrate · 03/08/2018 20:03

Saw a local retired horse vet this evening when i was hacking who commented how "well" my horse is looking, and it is just as well because we're "coming into winter now". This was in all the heat and winter is the farthest thing from my mind!

Mine are in for about 6 hours a day. They get chaff and fast fibre and blue chip balancer - one gets lots and one gets a couple of handfuls. One gets ad lib hay, one gets a little bit of hay. Out the rest of the time in fairly bare and unappealing looking paddocks.

noideawhattodonow · 17/08/2018 21:29

Calm and condition, chaff, turmeric, glucosamine and micronised linseed twice daily

17.2 off the track Tb coming back from 14 months off since he last ran.

2'huge haynets and out for 8 hours a day. But I am trying to get weight on him.
