Wwyd? Horses, heat, turnout v stabling

Horses are out at the moment. There's no field shelter, but plenty of hedges which provide limited shade. Lots of water.

Or I could bring them in. Stables, however, are boiling, albeit shady. There's a slight breeze outside but loads of flies. Less flies in the stables, but no breeze and very hot.

Wwyd?

Leave them out with fly masks. The horses here sweat up within minutes when they are inside during the day.

Another vote for fly masks and leaving them out!

Mine lives out with others and has shelter (trees bushes etc) I went down the field the other day early afternoon to find the whole lot standing in the blazing sun in the middle of the field! I wouldn't bring him in.
Mines doesn't keep a fly mask on but is covered in fly repellant (one that everyone recommends) Im not sure why the what it would be like without repellent but there there are always loads of flies around him.

Mine is out, we have wooden stables and they are far too hot to use at the moment.
After the dreadful winter I feel bad moaning it’s too hot but the flies and heat are just as difficult to deal with!

Mine has the choice of in a lovely cool stone built stable or out. She chooses to be in the majority of the day but does pop in and out now and then.

Mine is out. Which is rare!
I usually bring in during the day but stables are hotter than field so she is living out (muzzled).
I think they are often happier out, and good at sorting their own temp out.
The minute it rains though I’ll have to bring in (lami prone) as the grass will go mad. I’m only getting away with 24/7 turnout as grass is buggered.

Thanks! I did bring him in for a bit earlier because I I wanted dd to groom and do stretches with him as soon as she got back from school. When we went to see him he wasn't sweaty and actually it felt quite cool in there.

He's not drinking much though! Didn't touch his stable water. They have a huge trough in the paddock but all I see is Big Horse driving him away Angry

Mine are in during the day in this heat, but our fields have zero shelter, the flies are absolutely awful, and the stable block is quite cool. Today though, as it's cooler, they are out with fly masks.

The only thing that would worry me is that he isn't drinking a lot, which is vital in this heat. Can you give wet feed(s) and/or wet hay in the field if you can hang a net, or nets so that they aren't squabbling over it?

Jorah · 10/07/2018 12:42

yeah I'm giving them a really sloppy feed (fast fibre) everyday with some salt and their balancer in it.

I have several buckets in the field. I drop an apple in each bucket if I think they aren't drinking.
