Hi all, I'd like to have nice nails for the office but they're constantly getting chipped from mucking out etc so I've never bothered getting then done. I'd really like to start so what is the most robust. Gel or shellac or what. I'm clueless! I can wear gloves for the horsey stuff.

I have started having SNS done and I swear it’s indestructible! It’s a powder that your nail is dipped in and it hardens over the natural nail then polished and shaped. Loads of colours to choose from and easily changed. They don’t use any files on your nails either

Shellac or any form of gel polish is just a few layers of gel polish on your nails. They cure it under a uv lamp and the polish reacts to the light to create a very thin layer of plastic in your nails. And while hat sounds quite flimsy, it does give a great amount of strength with a bit of flexibility.

You can also opt or some hard builder gel underneath the gel polish for some extra strength.

I would not recommend getting anything with a tip glued on for length - try to keep your nails short. A bit of length is fine but anything too much and you risk breakage. The gel will allow your natural nails to grow without breakage and then you can decide what length is comfortable for you.

And I'd stay away from acrylic. Just because I don't like how bulky it looks but that's just my opinion and I do feel gel is stronger.

I'd get a gel mani first and see how you get on. If it's still breaking then get the builder gel layers too.

Why don't you just wear gloves for everything? I have allergy issues so try not to touch stuff, decent pair of leather gloves will help.

Thanks everyone. Every time I do my nails I wreck them by pulling hay from a bale or something. Even with gloves they get trashed. I'd like to look better at work, although I have gone in with hay in my hair that I didn't find till lunchtime Blush. My horse is definitely better groomed than me.

Another vote here for gel.
I've been having my nails done with gel for years and rarely break one while seeing to my horse.

The main culprit for breaking my nail is the filing cabinet drawer at work!
