Basic kit for DD(5)

DD seems to be sufficiently into her lessons that it would be worth buying some proper kit.

I'm thinking she needs proper gloves, boots, jods. Would you get a hat? The riding centre allow cycling helmets.

Also, would you buy a gilet or just wear a coat? It's freezing so she wears her ski jacket but she gets so hot when she's spending half an hour trying to do rising trot.

Have I missed anything?

TIA

I wouldn't bother with a body protector unless she's jumping, but i'd spend £80+ on a hat.

If it's not UK, then I suppose the lack of health and safety makes sense. If you're non-UK, then you're less likely to find a PAS015 hat as well- but there are equivalent safety standards.

This link might help you find the most common safety standards in your country www.horseandhound.co.uk/features/riding-hat-rules-473408

The price of hats can vary hugely, so you should look for one with the right standard, not necessarily fixate on price. Hats without a safety standard haven't been stress tested, and therefore might not offer as much protection to your DD if she fell on a hard surface or if a horse were to kick out and catch her head.

At this stage, imo, a body protector can stop children developing a natural seat. I wouldn't bother until she is regularly jumping (or regularly falling off!)

Thanks Lady. I will be looking for a UK standard hat and I think you're right about the body protector.

(Sorry namechanged!)

Our school insist on body protectors as soon as they trot independently. So if you child is still on lounge I would wait a bit longer.

Hat, gloves yes. Jodphurs are more comfy than jeans and warmer and better than leggings.

DD wears layers. In winter a thin thermal ski roll/high neck (if necessary another short sleeve T-shirt underneath), then the body protector and a thick hoody. If necessary she wears a autum/spring coat on top of that. That is normally enough for a 1 hour lesson.

I got a uvex hat in the end as the shop said they are specifically made for children. It was quite expensive!

Typically she's been ill since we bought the kit so hasn't used it yet!
