Best turnout rugs?

So.... new pony needs a decent turnout. Think bleak Exmoor hillside. He has a stable but prefers to be out.

He is 5'3" in his current Masta. Connemara cross. Big bottomed. Bib clipped at the moment.

How do you buy rugs. Do you order online? Can't find local place with decent quality rugs.

We bought some horseware ones 20 years ago that are still going so I tempted by them. Not very impressed with the masta he came with.

What do people think of layering systems? Horseware? Are necks really necessary? I've been told that he may be 5'6'in horseware. You then get more choice.

Arrggghhh.

We mostly buy Horseware - don't really get on with anything else except our novice (5yo) Connemara has a Falpro rug and it really fits him well and is really easy to see in the dark.

We go for rugs with detachable neck covers so we can make a choice each morning depending on the weather forecast. We don't mind them getting cold but as they are clipped I don't like them going out without a neck in the rain/sleet.

We usually buy online although occasionally buy at HOYS or at the brilliant Ingatestone Saddlery if we can make the effort to drive there.

One of our favourite rug dealers is Eileen Douglas Tackshop - very good service and always competitively priced. Sure there are lots of other good online places though.

We really like Premier Equine. Have tried all sorts - masta, fal, horseware, bucas (horse has over 30 various ones). You can often get good deals in their sales. The fly rugs are fantastic.

Shires have really upped there game in the rug market last few years.

I have either Shires or Weatherbeeta on my girl now.
Love Horseware but they just don't accomadate her massive shoulders.
Premier Equine get heavy when wet I find.

Fal fal fal fal and the occasional premier equine. The amigo one I bout this year lasted a month.
I prefer to layer then you have a combination of weights.

I buy from Tack Express-excellent service and very helpful. I have bought two Shires rugs this year, medium and heavy turnout, am very pleased with both.

Premier equine and Horseware all the way.

I have a little cob x in 5'3 rugs and the weatherbeeta are the best. Important to have a pleat so their big shoulders don't get squished

Another vote for Horseware, I really like the Rhino turnouts. Also very happy with Mark Todd rugs which have lasted really well. I buy online and really just google a bit to find the best price if there's a specific rug I want. The Saddlery Shop website is great for bargains, I guess they must be like last year's colour reduced now a different pattern has come out for example.

Mark Todd rugs are great. I always go for detachable necks to give a bit more choice. I like Horseware rugs but they come with hook clips on the front and the amount of horses I have seen get those front hooks caught on things is unreal so no longer buy them

Weatherbeeta are amazing. Never leak and lightweight with comfy fit like memory foam wither pads, elasticated soft leg straps etc
