Loaning a pony - why is this puting people off?

I'm looking for a pony to loan. I'm open about it being kept at home as we have our own stables etc. I ask all the usual sort of questions about whether the pony is suitable for lead rein/first ridden. I say what we'd like to use it for and for how long. So far so good, messages going backwards and forwards. If it's all looking good I ask if I can come for a look and if there's anything else they want to know about us and by the way I'd want a loan agreement in place. Then silence! No reply, no further messages, not even a "sorry we've found someone else". Am I wrong to be introducing my expectation for a loan agreement at that stage? This has happened 3 times now - I'm wondering where I'm going wrong. I have never loaned thought we do own a pony already. The most recent one was also out of date in its vacation so I asked if the owner would be prepared to take the cost of getting it up to date and we would take the cost of the boosters. Was that right? We have a great home to give to the right pony with a fun and varied life with two girls who do a bit of everything with their current pony. I don't understand why the loan agreement seems to be the deal breaker - surely you'd want that in place as an owner too?

Hi,
A loan agreement should definatley not be a deal breaker imho.i would not loan or have on loan a pony without one. I don't think the timing would matter, as I would want the owner to know I am a responsible loaner.
We have a pony out on loan, with the most perfect family, and have a template of the BHS agreement with a few adaptations on it.
I can't speak for a loan with injections that aren't up to date, but when we have brought, none of ours have had injections done, never mind up to date so we have just had to pay for the course.
Keep on looking, the right pony and owner are out there, somewhere!

I don't know why people are shying away from a loan agreement. It's a sensible option for both parties.
Maybe go to see a pony and then broach the subject if you like the pony.
I have a loan pony who needs her back checking regularly. I agreed to pay for it to be done twice a year but if she needs any more or further visits then the owner will pay for those.

You're being completely sensible asking for a loan agreement. I think someone who's not willing to sign one is probably the kind of person you don't want to loan from anyway.

The right person will come along, it's just a matter of finding them!

I don't know, but you wouldn't like a lovely little backed then turned away Dalesman, would you? Happy to sign any agreement you fancy! Grin
