Too old to learn?

Ive been thinking a lot lately about starting riding lessons. I used to go with a friend as a child, but then my parents couldn't afford it.

I'm now 38, fit & well, is it too late to start again? If not, what do I look for in a riding stables?

My mum's friends started learning in their 60s. Go for it!

Go for it! But expect not to be able to walk for a couple of days. I'd advise starting with half an hour not an hour :) Enjoy and welcome to the poor club!

You're never to old to learn to ride!
Make sure the riding school is BHS approved. If you go on their website you can search for riding schools. Where are going based? I can recommend a few places in Essex.

My friend started riding when she was 40. Go for it xx

After a 20 year break, I've gone back to it at 49. Absolutely loving it 😎

I rode a lot until 12/13ish and then briefly at 25. But then took up lessons again aged 35 and in the space of 6 months got a small job at the riding school (free lessons and got paid) and a horse on loan. A year almost to the day I had my first lesson, I bought my boy and am completely hooked. DH isn't best pleased but tries really hard.

I had a pony and lived to ride until I went to uni at 18 (23 years ago). I took up riding again at 41 a few months ago and I'm loving it. It was DD1 who wanted to learn & that was what made me start again. I really don't know why I didn't think about it before.

I just wrote a gurt long post and lost it! Angry

Am 48 - started riding a year ago with no previous experience and am loving it!!!!

Apocalyptichorsewoman · 27/06/2017 21:17

Would deffo say 30 mins lessons to start though cos you will ache in places that you didn't know you had!

BluePheasant · 09/07/2017 19:55

Go for it! I'm in my 30's and have had two long breaks since I started riding as a child. Longest break was 12 years. Now recently started again after another 4.5 year break. Rusty? Very! But you don't start from scratch, you'd be surprised how much you remember. I agree with PP though, be prepared to ache after the first few times Grin

I used to ride as a child and had horses on loan until uni. Stopped riding for a while, and started again then haven't ridden since I had my 8yr old dd. She's just stated riding so I went on my first hack with her yesterday! No aches yet! Definitely go for it!

cauliflowercheese14 · 11/07/2017 22:49

Yes do it. I started at 42 and love it.

Apocalyptichorsewoman · 11/07/2017 22:58

We should have a new /returning riders thread really - I'd be up for it! 😊

pumpkinpie5 · 12/07/2017 09:13

Ooh sounds good!

BluePheasant · 12/07/2017 09:40

yawning801 · 12/07/2017 09:48
