New pony- when to ride?

My sister has just gotten a new pony, a lovely sweet 5 year old mare who has done very little except the odd hack. We aren't a novice family and have had horses before.

Pony has seemed edgy but okay since she came yesterday. She was lunged and turned into bucking bronco Grin and is very bargy and strong- excitement I think.

When would you think about getting on her realistically? Should we give her a week or so to settle or just try and get on board and hope what she did on the lunge she does not do ridden?!

Would a hack or school be better?

It's been a long time since a new horse came into the family and we are like a pair of novices again Grin

Thanks

So glad it's going well!

I haven't moved yards yet but plan to in the nesr future, the new stable isn't free yet until the previous horse moves out Grin

I don't think I've met such a brave youngster and she's completely settled now. Sadly the riding side is what lets her down a little as I thought she had done more but that can be worked on.

She basically knows go and stop, that's it! I was planning on giving her a few weeks hacking just to get her out and about and then try and get started with the schooling and lessons. Does that sound about right?

Don't want to push her straight into hard ridden work from day one Confused

If you live in the right sort of area, you could walk her in hand also, strengthen your bond,
Go and stop ! 😂

Hacking is exactly what I would want done if I owned a just backed pony. Loads of quiet hacking, getting out and seeing stuff. Lovely!

Blackfellpony · 28/04/2017 06:46

So she has hacked alone and in company and is a complete star Grin
I am planning an assessment lesson for next week so I can get a professional opinion on what I need to do to improve her schooling and suppleness.

The plan is to hack and do a few local inhand shows this year then turn away for winter. I am now wanting a horsebox and it's getting out of hand Grin

Still not moved yards but she's nice and settled where she is for now.

My sister has definitely lost this pony Wink

How wonderful! Well done both of you!

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 28/04/2017 10:29

You do realise, we need to see a pic of your lovely girl, don't you ? 🐴

Garnethair · 28/04/2017 11:08

Fantastic. Ponies who hack alone sensibly are worth their weight in gold.

Blackfellpony · 28/04/2017 16:14

Here she is being walked like a dog- note to self must take better photos!

Aww, she is gorgeous, loving her whiskers 😄
I hope you have many happy years together.
Do you have any plans for her ?

Garnethair · 28/04/2017 18:39

Such a kind face. Very very nice!

Blackfellpony · 28/04/2017 20:08

I hope she will make a decent little show pony however I'm not sure she's quality enough to go too high but we will have a go and see what happens.

Maybe a bit of dressage if small hairy ponies are allowed!

Document her progress on here OP, I don't think she'll let you down, she's very pretty.😀

Gabilan · 30/04/2017 09:08

Small hairy ponies are allowed in dressage and can do very well! Apart from anything else, a 20x40 arena that feels hopelessly small on a 17hh warmblood feels OK on a pony.
