I have tickets for me and DD (10) for Saturday day time.

Anything we need to know as spectators? We have seats for the big arena... but there are other arenas... and shopping areas... I guess people come and go from their seats all day?

I expect food will be horribly expensive. Is there anything particular that people (well, kids) wear (I'm thinking DD will want her Joules riding polo shirt on). Is it horribly hot and crowded?

Anything not to miss?

Tips for parking? we are coming by car. Do the roads get busy?

Any advice welcome.

I am taking my daughter on Saturday too, but the information on the website is terrible as it says the show opens at 6.35 am but it gives no detail about what time things are on in the arena! I was thinking of aiming to be there about 12 and spend a while looking at the stands before going into the arena. The tickets are so expensive I would be fed up if we missed something good. The parking is quite easy - you get directed to the right place but when we have been to concerts there it can be tricky getting out as everyone leaves at the same time. This might not be a problem on Saturday though as not everyone will be leaving at the same time. The food will be horrendously expensive! Hope someone who knows more might be able to add more info...

I was there on Wednesday, and yes it is horribly expensive on the food front - 2 sandwiches, 2 packets of crisps and 2 drinks were £15.00.....having said that it was ok quality wise.

There are 2 arenas, the main one and the Caldene which you can come and go from as you please. It was especially busy on Wednesday but I would imagine it is at the weekend, and it gets quite warm. It is well spread out though - go and look at the fancy horseboxes, they're amazing!

Parking is pretty well organised with lots of space and regular shuttle buses. The website is useless, just the list but no times, however I have the catalogue from Weds (£9.00) which says that showing starts at 6.50 in the main ring and 7.00 in the Caldene. If you have a particular thing you'd like to see let me know and I'll tell you what time it's on. The Vaulting display @ 2.30 was good, the mounted games are on at 2.40 and the Mounted Police display is at 3.00. International show jumping starts at 3.45 and finishes around 5pm.

It's fun but knackering!

That's is so useful frostyfingers, thank you. It was the vaulting, mounted games and police display that I didn't want to miss so you have provided the perfect info for me! Can't wait now ??

Hi all, I love HOYS having ridden there myself about 17 years ago and DD (aged 12) will be riding there for the 2nd time on Sunday morning! I don't think we've missed going for 20+ years.

There is a brief schedule on Hoys Website - the key thing to remember is that it starts very early - 6.50am in main arena (Andrews Bowens) and 7am in the showing arena (Caldene) and the afternoon performance finishes about 5.30pm. If you want exact times (and more detail than you could ever want!) click on the Competitor Zone and then click on 2015 Schedule and you'll find everything there down to the last minute.

Your tickets will be for reserved seats in the Andrews Bowens although in reality you can sit pretty much anywhere first thing in the morning because it only gets busy from mid morning onwards.

Your tickets will also allow you to go to the Caldene Arena to watch any of the showing classes and they have free seating in there although it does get very busy. I've never failed to find somewhere to sit though.

You will also be able to access the huge range of shops and other displays (Natural Horsemanship or whatever) in the areas between the two rings.

There are plenty of food outlets which can be expensive but if you take your own drinks and snacks and just by specific items like pizza or whatever you can keep costs down. We just stuff ourselves in the car before we go in and leave things to eat when we get back!

Car parking is fine and they have shuttle buses every 10 minutes - really not an issue. The NEC are used to dealing with massive crowds and everything is very efficient. The only queues you get are straight after the end of the performances but you can always hang around and shop more.

It is very hot and because it's all indoors try not to wear coats etc. We just wear what we'd wear around the house and yes horsey gear (Joules etc) fits in just great. Horsey and bling is usually the order of the day!

The one thing I'd say is that arriving at Noon seems really, really late! Is there anyway you can get there earlier because you'll miss loads of show classes, show jumping competitions, shopping opportunities etc.

I know we have to be there early because DD's class (the 3rd of the day) starts at 8.30am but I'd still try and get there by 10am if going for a fun day.

Check with your DCs in case there is anything they specifically want to watch - it may be on early...

We're going up on Saturday afternoon because DD has to ride her pony in on Saturday evening (her slot is 7.15pm to 8pm in the Caldene) and again at 5am on Sunday morning!!

Have a great time !

We are going for the third year in a row- we have tickets for the evening and we are getting there for 12! I agree you should try and get there earlier if you have day time tickets- we were there for 8 am when we had day time- and then left at 8pm! There is so much to see outside the arena.

I don't park at the NEC, I park at Birmimgham International and walk through.

Scottandcharlene · 09/10/2015 16:43

Thanks so much for all the info. Unfortunately we can't really get there much earlier than 12 due to other demands, but we will try!

Nishky · 11/10/2015 00:41

How did you get on- we just got back after the evening session. Hope you had a great time

Scottandcharlene · 11/10/2015 10:10

We had a lovely time, thanks. We arrived about 11.15 and stayed until 5, which was plenty of time for us! Can't believe how much we managed to spend on food, even though we knew it was going to be over priced. My daughter and her friend absolutely loved it and we were really lucky with both journeys in and out(rare for the M6). Really useful information on here - thanks! (And I wasn't even the original poster!)

Nishky · 11/10/2015 17:22

Glad to hear it was a success.
