I RODE MY HORSE

Long story started like this its long .

And then he bronco'd me off when I tried to get on resulting in broken ribs.

Roll on 10 weeks, 2 physio (sp?!) visits, a saddle fitter, shitloads of ground work and some serious trust building for both of us ..... I'm on!!!
Yipppeeee!!!!

First time Thurs was a leg up, today I manage to get on by myself from a mounting block by swinging my leg over ( wary of mounting with stirrup due to how I came off the first time) which is a huge achievement for us both! He didn't flinch or move today while I stood and psyched myself up!

He is ridiculously quiet to ride in the paddock but very very green (as expected), looking forward to our first hack tomorrow!

I think I may have just fallen in love with him all over again! Grin

Please excuse the state of me I very much need to ditch the warm comfy but look like a ball of scruff hoody!

Need to shout this fro the rooftops!!!

Well done you for getting back on!

I hope you don't think I am overstepping the mark but I don't think you should take him out on a hack tomorrow. I read your other thread but I am still not sure how much work he had done since retiring from racing. Has he been retrained? Either way 10 weeks off is quite a lot of time off and he may play up just because of that. I think it would be better if you approached this slowly and with caution. Do you have access to a school? Ideally you want to lunge him first and then get on him in a school where if you fall off you have a clear and soft landing. Assess him in a school for a few rides making sure steering and brakes work before you go out on a hack. When you do hack him make sure you go out with another very sensible horse.

Best of luck with him.

Well done, what an achievement. Another thought - have you got a body protector (can't tell from pic), as a "just in case"?

Bonkey · 26/10/2014 18:25

frosty No...its on the cards though! I hate riding in them (never really have unless for xc) but I think I'm just going to have to suck it up and get used to it because I obviously don't bounce like I used to...I dont know how I would cope with another serious fall.

Booboo Yes that would have been the sensible thing to do (not overstepping the mark at all, its what I would tell someone!) but I went anyway. Got on in 2 mins today rather than the 20 yesterday Hmm and went straight out I may be a bit insane . He was better than I expected, only one little twitch at a cat but apart from that he walked out beautifully and calmly, despite me expecting to feel like i was on a coiled spring.
We are right on the edge of town so I weaved in and around the streets for half hour a) so we weren't too far from home b) so we were close to houses/people should anything have gone wrong.

The thing with me is if I leave it too long I tend to get more nervous because I overthink. If I start to feel too safe in the school then it would have been harder to go out which is ultimately what I want to do for now ...does that make sense?

I tend to have a 'jump in at the deep end' way of doing things Hmm

He is very green but he has the basics in place. He listens to leg and seat aids and once hes asked to stand he stands until asked to move forwards.
He has one of the best attitudes I have ever known in a horse. :)

Glad it all went well!

I am the opposite, more of a think of the worst case scenario kind of wuss!

Bonkey · 26/10/2014 22:24

Not wuss - sensible!
