Where will it end?

So we started off at riding school, then we loaned a pony- I will never buy one I said! Then we bought one for DD1 ...then we bought another for DD2...NOW WE WANT A 4x4 SO WE CAN HAVE A TRAILER!!!

My poor DH and DS are home alone, bereft and poor and me and the girls are having a fantastic time.

There no point to this thread other than to warn anyone thinking of getting into the horse thing, oh, and also is getting a trailer really worth it?

A wise man once told me the pony is the cheapest thing you will ever buy- maybe not entirely accurate but its true that it never ends - I now drive around an HGV wagon stuffed full of ponies!

Have you looked into a 3.5t lorry that you can drive on a car licence? As you could keep an economic run-around car rather than spend all your driving time watching a fuel guage drop on the 4x4, plus some spare room to gets kids changed for shows etc.

TooMuchCantBreath · 03/10/2014 20:18

At one stage I sold my car and drove my 3.5t wagon to work. .... do not embark on riding lessons for your dc - ever.

Caveat; this is the most expensive thing you will ever do but you'll be the happiest you've ever been - it's definitely not simple maths Grin

I think it depends what kind of non horsey mileage you do in your car as to whether it works out cheaper to run a 4x4 which uses lots of fuel for all your miles, or to maintain, tax and insure another vehicle. Once you have had your own transport you will never want to be without it again though Smile.

TooMuchCantBreath · 03/10/2014 21:40

Exactly why I sold the car not the wagon, I could transport myself and the dc in the wagon but I couldn't shift the ponies with my Peugeot Grin

I'm laughing at driving the wagon to work! Theres someone at pony club with the most ginormous lorry. The girls and I were laughing so much at the idea of their dad's face if we pulled up outside our house driving a lorry!

We do run 2 cars so Its not too much of a stretch to imagine changing one of them? (pebble I would love a lorry!).

Interesting to hear, Misog thats its worthwhile. No-one I know is into horses and they all think I'm mad!

Ah OP, the horsie life for you and your DDs. Not having a horse at the moment, it makes me all warm, fuzzy, and nostalgic for you Smile. Horses help to build so many great memories within families.

AnnaFiveTowns · 03/10/2014 23:14

OP, I am where you were at the start of your journey. About to get a pony on loan for dd. Starting to think we might buy it instead. Then I'm thinking that, actually, I'd quite like to start riding again. Now I'm looking at the corner of our field and wondering how much it will cost us to build a ménage. I'm also looking at trailers on Preloved - but then we'd need to change our car....bloody hell, it goes on and on... And we can't really afford it!

misog2000 · 04/10/2014 02:02

Oh Anna......it's a slippery slope lol.

mrslaughan · 04/10/2014 07:48

You need to get your son involved!!! that is the answer! DS loves riding, the only lament for me is there are so few boys and it is so hard to find suitable jodphurs.

Flexibilityisquay · 06/10/2014 21:20

I think it is too late to warn most of us! I've just taken the plunge and got a 4wd and trailer. Not sure yet if it was worth it. Ask me again next year. Smile
