Laminitis

I don't know where to begin. My beautiful girl has been xrayed this morning and the vet has confirmed that her pedal bone has detached. Thinks it was caused by an acute episode rather than a slow build up. She has been in for 10 days now and has to continue to be rested until the vet has spoken to the farrier about getting some bar shoes fitted. She is retired and hasn't been shod for years.

Anyone got any experience of this?

Thanks both. Will look at all available stuff.

I just feel so bloody helpless not being able to drive and therefore unable to spend much time with her.

My pony first had laminitis (stress-induced, we believe) aged 12. We managed her, with diet, restricted grazing and exercise for 10 years, until she had another few, awful bouts, which came from nowhere. Blood tests were -ve for cushings, but she was eventually diagnosed with equine metabolic syndrome, placed on a v strict management regime, incl remedial shoeing and enrolled on a clinical trial (trilostane). For the last ten years of her life, she was laminitis free and eventually medication free, as the cost became prohibitive and we decided to give her a month without it, before making a decision, but she stayed sound.

Long story short, she died a couple of months back, aged 32, from a heart attack. She was sound and happy (barefoot, managed by an excellent farrier, cantered around the field the day she died)

Her X-rays, upon diagnosis, were about as bad as you get, rotation-wise (no sinking). Nobody could have predicted the outcome we had and while I appreciate that we were very lucky, I just wanted to share a positive story :)

That's a fab story. Talking to a physio whose horse dropped dead from a heart attack in the field aged 33. Just perfect really. No suffering, no bloody decision to be made.

Not being able to get to see her and spend time with her is very difficult.

Cushings results back Monday hopefully.

Any news OP? Had our vet out this week for jabs and both he and the farrier have said they're getting a huge amount of laminitis cropping up . Apparently the growing season has exploded this year , which hasn't helped at all . My fields aren't even going down .

ExitPursuedByAKoalaBear · 01/07/2014 20:18

She is clear of Cushings. I was a bit disappointed as at least it would be something to treat. Vet she could go out on a very small patch, but not sure if that was for eating or to stop her running around. She could run around on a small area so I bit the bullet and turned her out alone for 30 minutes last night and tonight. I've purchased a muzzle and tomorrow she is going out for the afternoon. She will hate the muzzle and I imagine the boys I the adjoining field will help her yo get it off. We are ontop of the Pennines so not particularly lush grazing.

Fingers crossed she keeps the shoes on.

There is a programme on laminitis in Horse & Country on 23rd July. 9pm I think.

Those of you with success stories - had the pedal bone rotated?

Plomino · 01/07/2014 21:21

My DPony's had rotated slightly but not fully - about 40 percent the vet said . She still completely recovered and I had her for another 11 years without another episode before I found her collapsed in the field , and she died with her head in my lap under her apple tree . Not having Cushings is a good thing , believe me . It'll in all probability require some management changes , but it really can be done .

ExitPursuedByAKoalaBear · 01/07/2014 21:28

Mine is only 10.5%. I want an Apple Tree!

I know it's a good thing. I just feel the need to medicate for a result.

Thanks so much for your support.

It was so lovely to see her rolling in the sunshine.
