The tack room
qualifications (and how to get them)

Hello
just interested at this point, looking to do some form of horse-related education as I'd quite like to do some groom work in my spare time (i will never be able to own a horse but love being around them)
I did a lot of yard work at my local stables through my teen years and enjoy every aspect - even poo picking in the rain!
As it has been a few years since I want to get back doing again until I get the chance to work on my riding confidence, so to bring myself up to date and to make myself attractive to employers I figured something qualification wise would be a good idea.
so, what is worth doing? And what can I do without my own horse? Although I have a couple that I can borrow and maybe an instructor too
thanks in advance for any pointers

why will you never be able to own a horse? could you formally part-loan one instead? best of both worlds!
check the british grooms assoc for what the current sort of industry standard is, and try riding schools and local agricultural colleges
I did the BHS stages 1 and 2 (and riding and road safety which was a requirement) at a BHS yard and the NVQ2 (these don't exist now I don't think?) part time through Otley college (was just for personal enrichment not as a means to get paid work although I was a house/pet sitter and it was helpful to show equine qualifications however basic) as for 'worth doing' it's probably not like equine dentistry or something where you can earn reasonable money so I suppose you'd have to weigh up how much you want to do it against the cost?

Thanks Mitchy under a previous incarnation I wrote about my tribulations with loaning and sharing (broke my back and lost my nerve) it would be mainly a personal thing and also to be up to date on feeding/grooming etc.
I'm thinking the BHS stuff would be the most appropriate at this point then. I will ask at my local riding school - early next year I should be riding again (currently pregnant) so need some lessons for the confidence.
