Which hat for dd?

MarianForrester · 03/10/2013 17:56

I was just wondering if any of you experts could recommend a style/make of riding hat I should get for 12 year old dd.

She has just started riding again, and I have said I will get her a new hat as her old one is far too small.

But I know nothing about these things and there is so much choice! Should I get velvet, or skull cap with those cover things? Or be of the sort of plasticky ones with vents?

I obviously want her to have the best protection, but also to have the Right Thing, so that she will fit in with the other girls.

Bumping.
My dd10 is needing a hat
I'm definitely a novice!

You need to take her to a good tack shop with a qualified hat fitter, and let them tell you which style fits. Each make and style fits slightly differently. Last trip it took 20 hats to find one for ds

If theres a choice, then most go for a skull cap so they can accessorise with silks

I agree with having a fitting, they are slightly different shapes and suit different heads. My 10yo has 2 different sized hats as depending on the stage of her hair growth (dd not pony) her hat is a different size (she has Afro hair). I personally don't like the ones with the dial at the back .

anydreamwilldo · 03/10/2013 21:21

Ooo interesting thread, my dgd has afro hair and it was corn-rowed when I got her hat fitted. One month later with hair natural, the bloody hat is very snug!

Get her a skull cap . They offer the best protection and are suitable for all disciplines inc cross country.
Ask arround for a good tack shop and make sure it is really well fitted. New platic ones with vents are no bettter than a bike helmet I would stear clear if I was you.

Skull cap - I really think they are the safest. I ended up with serious concussion due to peak not breaking off of peaked helmet.

I like the Champion skull caps, but it is best to try different brands to see which suits her best.

Thanks, all. We have a local tack shop, so will take her to be fitted for skull cap.

Great advice, feel much more confident now Smile

anydreamwilldo- better that way round than finding it slipping if it had been fitted without the plats! I really find 2 hats is the way to go, especially if her hair has been blown and straightened, it's really flat then, more so than when in a canerow. if it is slightly tight make sure you put it on forhead first then the back of the hat. helps not to push the forehead down which can cause headaches (or so I was taught).

Marian I love the champion skull caps if they fit her head shape well Smile

anydreamwilldo · 03/10/2013 22:30

Lovesswimming-am going to get a skull too, and do your thing working around the hair style of the day. Will have to wait til payday though. Thanks for the tip. She is only just 5 and so keen but its costing a fair bit. She said she just loves the smell of ponies.....

Lovesswimming · 03/10/2013 22:37

it gets slightly easier as they get older as less head growth! though tiny ones love any horse clothes, tops and glittery things (from Asda!) but teenagers want the hugely expensive hats (with crystals on! - my answer was no!) and named horsey gear the list goes on enjoy this age while you can

Butkin · 04/10/2013 19:06

Absolutely agree with well fitted Champion skull cap. As regards a cover it depends on what she plans to do. If she hacks then a multicover of her choice. if she wants to show or hunt then a blue velvet one. If show jump then black velvet one. If X Country then worth getting one that co-ordinates with the jersey she plans to wear.

If high level showing then a Charles Owen velvet one with skin coloured strap would be the thing but definitely get a skull cap first.

Butkin · 04/10/2013 19:14

Loves, you're not wrong about hugely expensive hats! DD was trying on helmets from here at Royal International and is hoping for one for Christmas. www.gpahelmets.co.uk/ourshop/cat_513876-2-Prestige-Helmets.html

Lovesswimming · 04/10/2013 19:52

Lol!! Yeah! That's a lot if poo picking and mucking our for her to earn one if those!

MarianForrester · 05/10/2013 13:08

Thanks to all. Good to know, butkin, about the suitability of skull cap with colours for different things: I think she does want to aim for a wee bit of competition, some pony club, some others.

We are going to head for tack shop next week for her to be fitted properly. Thanks again Smile
