present ideas for pony mad 10yo?

stealthsquiggle · 30/09/2013 19:56

If any of you are the owners of pony mad 10yo girls, pretty please could you ask them for ideas on objects /brands of desire?

Child in question doesn't have her own pony, so we are talking kit/clothes for girl rather than for pony, but I have no idea what the "cool" brands are...

TIA

Should probably mention budget - £25 ish.

There's a few nice Ariat tops/hoodies on the Robinsons website. Also lots of horse logo tops in Asda/sainsburys and next at the minute, my 10 year old loves them other than that a duvet cover (if you google it there are a few designs)

Lovesswimming · 30/09/2013 20:19

Try www.robinsonsequestrian.com for gifts, clothes etc for children. They'll have stuff in ready for Christmas probably :)

LeoTheLateBloomer · 30/09/2013 20:25

Sparkly riding crop I want one

stealthsquiggle · 30/09/2013 20:49

We do have a couple of big riding shops nearby, so I was planning to let 6yo (and also pony mad) DD loose, but am conscious that 10yo's are a bit more brand aware than DD so was hoping for brands/things which are "in" .

The sparkly whip is fantastically silly. I think that might be Christmas sorted (and DD might need one too)

My pony mad 10 yr old loves all the horsey tops from asda, tesco next etc, also she loves a funky pair of jods - robinsons usually do diff 1s- pink, flowery, purple, horse print etc, also loves the joules tops, & her horse print lunch bag from joules, she is also mad for schleich ponies as they are very realistic.
Hope that helps

Lovesswimming · 30/09/2013 23:43

Yes, just noticed the joules ones they are in Robinsons also. The brands that include children's ranges tend to be Horseware, Ariat, joules, tottie, just togs and rebel rider (rebel Rider have some tops in the sale) But my daughter loves the non brand tops and jods as well.

Floralnomad · 30/09/2013 23:47

What about sponsoring a donkey for her for a year ?

stealthsquiggle · 01/10/2013 10:22

Thank you all - decisions, decisions. I think chances are I will end up with some sort of top/gilet because I lack confidence in my ability to choose the right size of jodphurs - she is much slimmer than a very different shape to my DC.

I suspected Joules was probably a safe bet - I will try have a look and see what is in our local shops.

We have a pony mad 10yo DD.. She is brand aware but mostly fashion brands that she likes to ride in ie Hollister tops, Abercrombie tracksuit bottoms to go over her jods etc.

She likes to wear Ariat jacket and jod boots - that is a cool brand if you can find anything in the price range.

Jod aren't easy to buy for others. Our DD is skinny too and buys much smaller sizes but long length of leg - she always tries them on...

At 10 you have to be careful because they start moving away from gimmicky "pony" printed items to more sophisticated brands (or ours has at least). Ie She is getting Dubarrys for Christmas whereas in previous years she'd have been happy with Joules willies!

The whip is a good idea - they always go down well but get a smaller one for everyday hacking rather than a schooling length one that she may use in a lesson.

How about books? DD has loved the Pony Club secrets by Stacy Gregg. They are very age appropriate...

stealthsquiggle · 01/10/2013 15:11

Thanks again.

Butkin - that's what I was thinking - if I let DD(6) loose she will come back with all things pink and covered in ponies, and I am thinking that at 10 she is more likely to want "grown up" horsey stuff. I will have a hunt for Ariat might be socks though Grin TBH if necessary I will go over budget and just get her something smaller for Christmas (probably a sparkly whip!). I have just gone well over £25 to get her sister a rugby top, so it might be big birthday presents and small Christmas ones all round.

Teaandcake - the brief was "riding stuff" so I am a bit cautious of non-riding-related pony stuff, but a load of that may end up on DD's Christmas list!

Robinsons are a good call they do have a mix of things, depends on her tastes, riding stuff probably means some jodhpurs or socks or hat cover, there are some teen ranges about now from mountain horse if you can find them, do you know of a tack shop nearby?

stealthsquiggle · 01/10/2013 15:34

We have tack shops (well, farm supply shops which also sell tack and clothes and stuff) - lots of them (no other shops!) - we live in that sort of place Smile (child in question doesn't, unfortunately, so I can't easily return things or take her to try things on)

Just thought of another brand that DD loves - www.justchaps.com/

They sell lots of half chaps within your budget and our DD loves them. She used to have brown ones with red flames and had now moved onto blue ones with Union Jacks.

Slight problem could be getting the right size but thought I'd mention.

Lovesswimming · 01/10/2013 17:24

OP, did you manage to look at Robinsons, some of the Ariat tops were about £25 (long sleeved)

stealthsquiggle · 01/10/2013 17:33

So they are, Loveswimming. Thank you. I think I will go and have a look in a couple of the local shops (if things are more or less the same price then I would rather support them), and if we can't find anything I will order from Robinsons.

Half Chaps look really good. I will measure a not very representative sample of DC and consider whether I can guess a size for a tall slim 10yo....

OP posts:
Butkin · 01/10/2013 17:50

Our tall slim 10yo has just bought "medium childs" in half chaps..

Butkin · 01/10/2013 17:52

By the way you could also look at www.utterlyhorses.com/ - a pony mad childs dream shop..

CountryCob · 01/10/2013 20:26

Stealth that sounds like where I live half chaps sounds like a great idea xx

SmallBee · 01/10/2013 20:32

I'm 29 now so might be out of touch but when I was a pony mad 10 year old the present I loved the most was my own grooming kit, I was taken to a tack shop & got to pick out my own box & fill it with grooming kit basics-of course this only helps if she spends a lot of time at her local riding stables?
Otherwise the Saddle Club books are great. I also liked any books that helped me learn more about horses.

stealthsquiggle · 01/10/2013 21:33

SmallBe, I don't know Sad. She's my goddaughter, but one way and another I haven't seen her all year and last time I asked she was scared of horses so maybe I will interrogate her and, if appropriate, add a grooming kit to the whip for Christmas, since I have just gone way over budget to get her sister a rugby shirt Grin.
