mites?

GoSuckEggs · 24/07/2013 11:34

i think my horse has mites. i have started to notice thinning patches of hair. she has a sore bit and the hair started to thin around there first. i thought it was because of the sore, but now i am thinking mites.

so what is the most effective way of getting rid of the damn things?!

u mean your horse has mange?

link
or lice?
in which case you could use some standard louse powder from a country store.

Lovesswimming · 24/07/2013 12:30

Could be a number of things, what areas? Could be ringworm? Rainscald?

GoSuckEggs · 24/07/2013 12:46

she has it on the gaskin part of her leg, toward the inside. a bit on her chest, her arm pit.

i think perhaps it is mange.

burberryqueen · 24/07/2013 13:05

eww you know if it is sarcoptic mange you can be infected with human scabies...? just saying...

Pixel · 24/07/2013 18:35

Um, I had ringworm on my leg once and it started off like that. I just thought it was an insect bite or something until the rest of it came up in a big circle round it. What I'm saying is I didn't get the 'ring' part straight away so don't discount ringworm.

Lovesswimming · 24/07/2013 19:39

my lad had ringworm, it didn't look like a ring either

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 24/07/2013 21:58

Lice.
Mine went like this when they moulted. Their winter coats were fine, there was nothing underneath! There were also patches where they had rubbed themselves raw with thinning hair round about.
You need Coopers liquid or Deosect. If you only have one, the Coopers is great, a bottle should do 2 or 3 applications. It says to apply with a sponge, but I spoke to the company, and you can apply as a pour on from ears to tail. Far easier and more effective.

Lovesswimming · 24/07/2013 23:17

I agree with the coopers, I use deosect as a repellent but I here coopers is really good and would use it if I was you, it leaves a mark for a few days but works for flies too. Try and get some. Pour in a line as saggy says

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 24/07/2013 23:33

If you have more than one horse, Coopers can get expensive. A small container of Deosect will last all summer. Its 10mls to 500mls of water in a spray bottle.

GoSuckEggs · 25/07/2013 08:50

wow thanks burberry queen for your mature and helpful response. Hmm

I think I will just ignore your post from now on.

thank you everyone else! I am off to country store now for supplies!

OP posts:
burberryqueen · 25/07/2013 09:53

what?
i caught human scabies from a donkey with sarcoptic mange.
it was one of the worst experiences of my life
i was trying to warn you.
what is your problem with that?

burberryqueen · 25/07/2013 09:53

and how does that make me "immature"?
wtf?

burberryqueen · 25/07/2013 09:54

i will not bother sharing my equine experiences with you again.
go and brush your little pony.

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 25/07/2013 09:56

Whoa there OP! Burberry is completely correct! And as someone who also had scabies as a child, I completely agree with her! It is absolutely horrible!

burberryqueen · 25/07/2013 10:01

Thank you Saggy

burberryqueen · 25/07/2013 10:08

and OP if you don't have basic knowledge of minor ailments and what to do about mites you probably shouldn't be keeping a pony.

GoSuckEggs · 25/07/2013 12:41

it was the 'eww...' it just came across as quite childish and inmature.

i am fully aware that it can be passed on to humans, and i am being very careful and hygine aware.

i asked for advise in getting rid of them, as in what products you have found more helpful. - and she is a horse not a pony.

OP posts:
burberryqueen · 25/07/2013 12:46

so you didn't like 'eww' - if you had ever had sarcoptic mange passed onto you I think 'ewww' would be the least of it.

There was really no need to be quite so dismissive, unpleasant, and rude.

If you were 'fully aware' of anything you wouldn't need to ask silly questions on mumsnet would you?

I am sure your local riding school does stable management lessons, perhaps you should sign up if you want to keep your little pony healthy.

GoSuckEggs · 25/07/2013 13:03

i was asking for product recommendations.

jesus, it is people like you that give horse people a bad name!

OP posts:
burberryqueen · 25/07/2013 13:05

is it really?
and how did you work that one out?
because I said 'eww' about mange and pulled you up on your rudeness?
Confused
go and drink some camomile or something sweetie, you need to chill, seriously.

GoSuckEggs · 25/07/2013 13:08

on my rudeness? oh ok. Hmm

OP posts:
burberryqueen · 25/07/2013 13:13

yes i think
"wow thanks burberry queen for your mature and helpful response. hmm

I think I will just ignore your post from now on"

was incredibly rude when i was trying to be helpful and offer you advice based on my experience.

meh. whatever.

GoSuckEggs · 25/07/2013 13:24

indeed. whatever!

OP posts:
SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 25/07/2013 14:20

Now now children!
Go, Burberrry was pointing out a fact. It is Eew, yes, but still a relevant piece of info. You were rude to her. A simple "I know that thanks, I'm actually after a recommendation" would suffice.

GoSuckEggs · 25/07/2013 22:50

I know that saggy. I was not having the best morning. So was probably more touchy then usual.

I just read it in the tone of a sarcastic teen " ewww.... just saying" smerk and shrug shoulders type of thing!

I suppose that is the trouble with not being able to see body language, very easy to take things the wrong way.
