Xmas present ideas for a 'horsey friend'

I hope I haven't offended anyone by using the word 'horsey'! I vaguely remember a school friend not liking that term....

I am hoping for some inspiration ladies. My DH's business partner owns her own horse and rides every day etc. We always struggle getting a gift for her and was wondering if something related to her hobby would be good?

Want to spend about £40-£50. But apart from that I haven't got a clue.
Does anything spring to mind?

Thanks in advance.

Someone had some tail hair from my friends horse plaited into a bracelet for her. It had a silver clasp and was lovely.

I saw a kit to make your own bracelet from tail hair in the tack shop this weekend which was really nice.

If you know the horses name, you can get really nice embroidered headcollars on ebay

Thank you-like both ideas. I've met horse lots-my 3yr old DD loves him. I'll check out the head collars. Maybe the bracelet kit too-but don't think I'd be able to get the tail hair myself.

I'd have never come up with either of those...

A really good pair of leather riding gloves, I am always losing mine, along with a good pair of wellie socks.

How about a small ladies hip flask. I was given a silver one, with a leather cover. It is small to fit in handbag or pocket and came in a little leather pouch. Fill it before giving it of course.

If you don't know a great deal about horses, how things fit, the horses 'size' etc, then may I suggest that you get your friend a gift certificate from her favourite saddlery? That saves you from having to shop for a difficult gift, and then she gets to spend it on something that she would really like to buy. She will be thrilled that you have even thought enough of her to get her a voucher from a saddlery, as most non-horsey people don't understand how important horses are to us, and hence don't buy horsey gifts.

Hope this helps.

Oh definitely if someone got me a voucher for a saddlery I would be over the moon GrinGrin

goralka · 04/12/2012 20:27

ooh yes a full hip flask, some tasty gloves and/or some handwarmers?

MaybeAMayBaby · 04/12/2012 20:48

Thank you all for replying. I'm actually still torn as I quite like all the suggestions. Hoping to see the horse and friend over next week or so, will hopefully help make up my mind.
How will I know where a saddlery is Confused. I know that I a stupid question and your answer will be google! I've never heard of such a place.

I'm not sure she drinks-if she does it is very rarely. Maybe riding gloves are the way to go? The horse is massive! Not sure of size but I'd be a bit worried about headcollar size. I assumed 'full' on reading the descriptions but DH reckons he is much larger than most horses he know (like he knows any!).

Thanks again for your help. Least I've got a starting point now Smile.

Some online saddlery places do vouchers! I know that www.inter-equine.com would probably do them
Otherwise you'd have to google saddlery and your town
Riding gloves are always nice, I wear Roekl ones. Maybe do a little spying when you see horse and friend as to what she is wearing or horse has on. Sometimes head collars have little tags/labels on with the size

Get your DH to ask her if there is anything that she would like for her horse as a Christmas Present.

Failing that, what about a saddle cloth (the square shaped type) embroidered with the horse's full fancy name. (not his everyday name, they usually have two names). A saddlery voucher is an excellent idea, most of my horsey friends would much rather have something nice for their horse than for themselves. Or if you wanted to go with the fancy head collar idea, go for a leather one with a brass plaque with the horse' everyday name engraved on it. You could get a really nice quality one with your budget. ask how big the horse is, cob size is from about 14 hands to 15.2 hands, full is above that, probably if bigger than 17 hands horse will need extra full, but perhaps you can make up an intelligent sounding question based on that information! Probably brown leather rather than black, unless horse is black. Are you near London, I am just thinking Olympia is on anytime now, and you can go in for the horsey shopping without having to pay I think. There would be loads of things to choose from then.

Gloves are great. My sister gave me an expensive pair last Christmas, I think of her every time I am riding and my hands are warm.
