ok- I'm giving you all one more chance to rename our new pony. He's a bqlck Dales with a star, a snip and a sock.

Currently he's called Louie, which we don't like, but which will stick if we haven't thought of something else by the time he arrives at 11.00 tomorrow.

please..........!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know Sad. What's that all about? Inspired by a recent pony thread on here I looked up the cost to buy one locally and they are next to nothing to purchase. So very, very, very tempting....I know the vet, farrier, board, equipment and transport costs make it a significant commitment but surely pony over-breeding is not really a problem, is it? How does that happen? We have a yard five minutes from our house and I'm trying to convince DH....

very very tempting...dd's pony has excellent bloodlines and cost 142 guineas. However the costs since, although not huge, have been of course relentless, and the price of hay is unpredictable. If you get a pony that can live out all year and have some good local advice, I would recommend it......the pony kept dd busy and happy all summer.

Treacle

monsterchild · 22/09/2012 23:19

I want a pony too! But there just aren't a lot of them here in southwest US. I'd especially love fell or Dales pony!

NellyJob · 22/09/2012 23:20

Horses that could carry some weight are not as startlingly cheap. I saw tiny ponies going for 30 quid last month, but good sized strong young horses were going for as much as 400 or 500.

NellyJob · 22/09/2012 23:20

Grin @ treacle

rogermooreseyebrow · 22/09/2012 23:30

I know he's Louie & not Louis but how about Satchmo?

yeh whimsy, do it!

SrirachaGirl · 22/09/2012 23:45

Do it, do it! . Maybe there should be a MN pony and all the sad, grown-up, pony-mad teenagers could vicariously enjoy the MN ponies...sort of a virtual part-board Grin.

Srira, Sadly, pony breeding is a problem. Ive got friends in Welsh A's who've seen farms in Wales breeding dozens, in order fo keep a few. The rest just get mass culled by the meat man. Gypsys are also responsible for high numbers. Check out DragonDriving for a view of a few. Sad
TBH, sometimes the meat man is a good option.

Happy to offer Louie- or whatever his name will be- as the mumsnet pony. He will have a blog- so he'll be easy to follow. And we'll need all the expertise and cheering on we can get!

Dd has said she'll be happy for him to be the mumsnet pony as long as whenever she asks a question there are no more than 3 silly answers. Once 3 people have said Usain Bolting, Mo Farrier and Pudding or similar, everybody thereafter has to be serious!

OrangeandGoldMrsDeVere · 23/09/2012 08:46

Everybody stop talking about how cheap ponies are.
It's not helping!

I want one so bad my tummy hurts.

I promise to give sensible answers if I get to have a share in DD's pony.

Atticus
Ché
Cassius
Rudy
Marley
Thelonious

(these are sensible answers to me, check me out on baby name threads)

When I was little I had a pony called Telstar (gives away age) hi still miss him.

seeker · 23/09/2012 09:43

Well, they've set off to get him. Hope he loads........eeeeeeek!

I like Atticus- and dd did TKAMB for GCSE.

Dd is liking Banner a lot at the moment. We've agreed on a family meeting over pizza tonight to discuss a shortlist.
