equestrian jobs?

Due to a couple of unexpected bills I need to up our income.

I've only ever worked with horses and got jobs by word of mouth.

I now live in a new area and would love a job with horses, even just mucking out and general skivvying, but I don't know many people, or where to look.

Or somewhere that will let me work in exchange for livery/grazing to reduce my outgoings a bit.

Anyone know the best places to ask/look online? Any suggestions on services I could offer (horsey or non horsey) to make a bit of cash?

you could advertise (in tack shops) freelance groom type services, for when people are on holiday/ill/working and can't do their own horses? I used to do this, actually a whole range of pet care things like dog walking. My insurance was about £100 a year but otherwise fairly minimal outlay

Local Hunt yards? Tis the right time of year to take people on. Just taken on three new grooms down the road here.

Chocolate - How do i go about finding local hunts? As i say i dont really know anyone round here and i've no idea where anything is! There is a fair bit of countryside and lots of yards though so there must be some!

Alameda - What sort of insurance would i need?

if you look at British Grooms Assoc they should be able to help, the company I used was Cliverton but also another one who indemnified me (was dispensing advice haha) and covered equine things

I thought of something earlier though and forgot to say, there is a new person at our very hard to find, unadvertised anywhere yard and I wondered how she found it because she is not from the area and she said she looked online at aerial photographs for stables and grazing then drove round asking people for livery/work

TheQueenOfDiamonds · 13/08/2012 22:52

I thought about doing that as ive looked on aerial photos to see where things are before and noticed a lot of yards, all within a 10 - 15 minute walk of me too. If it can work then i think i'll have a wander out on wednesday!

Advertise. Pop round local tack rooms, and chat to the staff. Also supermarkets and pet shops. Anywhere with a notice board. Phone everywhere. I've don't the areal photo thing when looking for grazing. It works well.

Jobrapido has an Equine section - the jobs on it are very broad ranging, but there's some good stuff on there. Horse & Hound also has good online jobs pages.

Get your CV sorted and send it out to all of the local yards, even private ones. State that you are happy with part time and give everyone you have sent a CV to a follow up call.

A friend of mine has recently set up a nannying/pet care/horse exercising business and is very busy. Might this be an option?

TheQueenOfDiamonds · 14/08/2012 22:23

Thankyou for the replies ladies, will follow up all your suggestions :)

Callisto - I would love to do something like that, The only problem with exercising horses riding wise is i'm not brilliantly confident english as i ride western mostly now. I would exercise something quiet english, But i don't know if anyone would be looking for that, judging by the ammount of people advertising for a horse to ride/exercise near me. I'm sure i could find people who want some mucking out done for a few quid a time though :)

I've had lots of different animals all my life so a pet sitting thing would suit me :)

Also advertise horse care for when people go away - those are like gold dust round here. Nice, experienced and trustworthy people who will do your horse can be hard to find.
