What were your favourite horsey books as a child? I loved the Jill books, and also the Saddle Club and the Ginny/Jinny(?) books about Shantih the mad Arab...I'd love to read them again but I bet they're out of print now. And Black Beauty and Flicka go without saying Smile

Jill was my absolute hero! Loved those stories!
Even as an adult I have reread them and found them entertaining!
A friend lent me Jill has Two Ponies and that was it for me - my obsession with ponies began! Myself and two other friends used to trawl secondhand book stores in the '90s looking for old fashioned out-of-print pony books! The older the better - loved the Armada versions with 2'6 on the front and illustrated covers.
As well as the Jill series I also loved the Pullein-Thompson sisters and as someone else mentioned Prince Among Ponies was read over and over! Phantom Horse collection were also well-loved, and any story that involved rescuing ponies from sales etc. Oh and the hunting series by one of the P-T sisters I carried the horn etc and the Pony Club series!
I could go on! I still have all mine, can't bear to part with them! Hoping to one day be blessed with an appreciative daughter!!

Oh yes - that is it - Orbit. I am sure she was called October - as for the first couple of pages I hadn't a clue what was going on, until I realised it was her name.

Ds1 (8) is working his way through my stash of pony books now, and the wistful "Muuuuum, can we have a pony one day?" has started. We're in the New Forest so I'm a bit worried he'll just rope one and bring it home from school one day Grin

My friend Flika and Thunderhead and the Ginny and Shantih ones. Would love to read them all.

Methe · 24/08/2012 18:43

re-read!

Ambrosius · 24/08/2012 18:51

Midnight Dancer, Jackie Won A Pony, Silver Brumby, National Velvet so many more that I can't even remember! If I wasn't on a horse/ mucking out etc I was reading about it!
Imiss.those days :(

Jill was my favourite but I also liked the ?Pony Island books by Mary Gervase, about someone called Georgia. I think they were about a pony-riding boarding school!

Flambards, think we even had a video of the series! I've got a 6 month old dd and I think I'm going to dig out all of my old books (yes I still have all of them!!) and start reading them to her!!

I absolutely loved the Jill books !!!! And does anyone remember a film which ended with a little pony standing between it's new owner (a wealthy boy) and it's previous owner (not at all wealthy) and being torn between the two as they both called for him to go to them . I remember being at the cinema sobbing !!! xx

Evie, I remember reading a book like that but didn't mention it because I haven't a clue what it was called.

I remember seeing this at the Sat matinee and crying my heart out

Eviepeevy · 27/08/2012 19:00

That's the one !!!! It was so sad. Can't even remember the ending I was so traumatised !!! Must have been the same time-ish as Watership Down which was equally heartbreaking !! xx
