Quick Jodhpurs question

Hi

I am getting back into riding after 10 years not riding properly, during this time I would have just gone on a trek maybe once a year. Before this I rode for about 5years. I have my first lesson tomorrow. I got jodhpur boots couple years ago only worn them couple of times, got new jodphurs other day as others don't fit.

Anyway really silly question, you know the elastic strap on end of jodhpurs, does this go under the jodhpur boot or under your sock. Never actually worn jodhpurs with jodhpur boots before, when I rode as a teen I wore jods with long boots and think I just put elastic bit under sock but can't remember if I always had elastic on them! When I was on treks over last couple years I had another pair of jods but they don't have the elastic on them (they are bad fit though too baggy on my legs I got them in a sale cheap but they did for the odd ride out).

Looking forward to my lesson tomorrow, hopefully I'll be wearing my jodhpurs the right way and will remember something about riding from years ago!

Thanks

I have to say I have never had jodhs with the elastic. As a child I had sort of elastic clips and put that under the boot. As an adult I have always worn half chaps over them. They keep the muck out of your boots, your legs warm, your jodhs cleaner and offer some protection against trees, gate posts and kicks. If I was wearing jodhs with elastic and half chaps I guess I'd put the elastic over my sock then put the boot on top. Or cut the elastic off.

Have fun riding tomorrow. I didn't ride for about 10 years once. It all came right back.

Thanks, yeah I can actually unbutton the elastic bit from the jodhpurs so I might do that if it is not comfy under sock. I live in Ireland so we have the RDS horseshow in a few weeks so might be able to get some half chaps at a good price there, always loads of stuff on sale cheaper than in stores near me. Are there any particular good brands you'd recommend?

Thanks for your help, can't wait to be back in the saddle again : )

Tredstep are a great brand but very expensive. I'm not sure about other brands. I like suede or nubuck with a zip down the side. You need ones that are stiff enough to not actually fall down (which is where the synthetic ones fail) but not so still that they take ages to become comfy (like the leather gaiter ones). They do stretch a bit, so get the tightest ones you can get one (they come in various width fittings, which is great if you have bigger or smaller than average calves). They often have extra fastenings top and / or bottom. I find buckles too irritating and fiddly. My fave tredstep ones just have an extra strap with a popper at the bottom. My other pair have that and a velcro strap at the top.

Oh, and they do look a bit funny if they are a different colour to your boots!

Thanks

Thats good they come in different widths, really appreciate the advice, I'll keep a look out for something like you mentioned. Hopefully I'll be able to get some soon.

The elastic goes on the outside. HTH.

lucertola28 · 21/07/2012 18:04

Thanks I put it on outside to keep jodhs from pulling up until I get some half chaps.

Lesson was really good, I bet I'll be a bit sore tomorrow though!

Yup outside, they are built in jodhpur clips )

DD always wears jodphurs with elastics (from Showing Selection) and the elastic goes over her jod heel and sits on in the instep.

She wears half chaps, for lessons, from Just Chaps (she likes the brown ones with red flames up the side!).

CMOTDibbler · 23/07/2012 11:05

I like the Just Chaps ones too - have had mine for ages and they are still looking great. DS had his first teeny ones from there too.

Butkin · 23/07/2012 11:26

Yes and DD has their waterproof trousers from Just Chaps which are great because they zip up the sides so she can taken them off whilst still mounted (ie just before going in the ring!).

Poledra · 23/07/2012 16:27

Oh. My. God. Just looked at the Just Chaps website. Someone hold me back before I order half-chaps with fringes. Please. I would regret it...

Just bought ds a pair of these at the Just Chaps stall at Hickstead. Really pleased with them, they are lightweight and cool, just right for summer. They do adult sizes too so I might have to get myself a pair!

I can't ride in just jods. Have to have chaps, 1/2 chaps or boots or the inside of my lower legs get sore. Keeps your jods cleaner too otherwise you get all that white grease on your legs. if your horse is filthy
