How long until you were able to ride and jump again after the cast came off?

Really, REALLY bad break at a competition in June last year. In plaster till mid-August, on crutches till mid-September, back at work (legs definitely needed for work, very rigorous medical to pass, which I fudged!) in early Oct, NHS physio finished in late Nov, back riding late Nov, skiing black runs in Feb, hunting again Feb (albeit a bit wobbly and cautious,) back to the scene of the crime a year to the day later to finish the class I started and take 3rd place . Grin

I'm still having private physio, but my biggest problem seems to be that I have to get someone else to do all the running around leading my daughter at Pony Club. Shame. Grin

What have you done?

I broke my heel and have only ridden once since, and that was five years ago. Sad. But I am quite old, my mare does not take prisoners and it was a really bad break.

I rode quite happily with a badly mashed wrist in plaster, so I an not a complete woos.

I am sure you will be fine.

positive vibes>>>>>

I've broken my ankle, and my foot on separate occasions. I rode with the cast on as soon as I could weight bear. Stupid and I wouldn't recommend, but hey, I was late teen/early 20s both times, you live and you learn.

bumbleymummy · 18/07/2012 08:27

Thanks. It's fractured in 3 places but I didn't need pins. The cast (full leg) is coming off soon. I wasn't allowed to weight bear for 8 weeks but I am now. Cast is off soon thankfully. Consultant thinks I'll be able to ride again in about 4 weeks but probably no competitions for the rest of the year. :( very annoying!

Also finding myself a bit nervous about jumping again. I'm sure I'll be fine when I'm back up. I hope I will be! I'm going to get someone else to ride my (fat!) boy for a few weeks before I get back up. He's been on holiday since it happened.

I came off my newly broken 3 yr old, landed on my feet and fractured my tibial plateau and compressed the tibia by 2 cm.
I had it pinned and plated, also had a bone graft from my pelvis to my knee. Was in hospital for a week, in a full cast for 4 weeks and a hinged cast for another 5 weeks. This happened 18th september 2005 and I was back on my horse on the 1st jan 2006.
I still have trouble with it, and had another operation on it 3 years ago. the metalwork is still in there.

Haha, when people say 'landed on your feet there, love' it isn't always such a good thing is it? I landed on my feet too, and twisted my ankle with such force I gave myself a Tillaux fracture. I tell people that I have the legs of a teenager. Grin It's really, really unusual in an adult, apparently, and a bugger to heal. I'm not sure all the attention I got from doctors when I did it was worth the effort though. Especially not when I was still BFing a young baby. (Could have been worse, he could have been the potential Olympic gold medallist sprinting toddler he's turned into!)

Galli, tibia here too only no pins or plates thankfully! Sounds like a good timeframe to me! Feeling more positive and excited about getting back on him today.

Go for it!
It wasn't his fault, he jumped over a rabbit hole that appeared in the indoor school and I wasn't expecting it. I moved yards after that with him.
A year to the day of my accident we had our first gallop outside!

roadkillbunny · 20/07/2012 13:00

I broke my leg in three places in January. Needed two plates and about 16 pins, there are pictures on my profile (I think!).
I have other medical problems that complicated things a bit, I was in a wheelchair for nearly 4 months (that was largely due to pre existing issues not allowing me to get about on crutches, would have only been a bout a month or so on wheelchair otherwise), then I spent a further month or so on crutches slowly putting more and more weight through the leg with the help of what I called 'das boot' a huge great boot cast thing worn while out and about only. Once I was cleared from doctor involvement at about 4.5 months (with 2 out of 3 bones healed) and was able to go at my own pace I got shot of the boot and was walking with one crutch within a couple of weeks and ditched that last crutch a few weeks later under physio guidance. Been walking around okay since 5 months post break and started to slowly build back up all the wasted muscles and get back to doing bits of yard work. We are now 7.5 months post break and I am fully back working (I am a free lance groom) apart from riding, over the last two weeks I have managed to do short bursts of the most awkward run you ever saw and finished physio (haven't time now children are out of school!), I now feel ready to ride as my leg and ankle (was a low break) are feeling much stronger and I am not thinking about it all the time, I am just getting on which shows me I am not getting much if any pain and it is working well. I probably wont ride until the children are back at school in September for a bunch of reasons (although have just got a new pony who is big enough for me to ride as well as dd so temptation is very strong!) so it will be close to 9 months for me when the time comes, I could have pushed it and ridden at just over 6 but I didn't want to set myself back and risk not being able to work again, has been too hard cash wise and childcare wise!
It sounds like yours while being bad enough didn't have too much trauma happen to surrounding tissues so I would expect you to be able to get back sooner, especially as it sounds like it didn't involve a joint at all. Good luck!

I broke my femur while in a road accident in 1987 but not on a horse fortunately and last time I rode I was so stiff I wasn't able to dismount Blush.

I'm 45 and want to return to riding regularly but need the confidence to get down to the stables and book a lesson! A physio friend has said the stiffness will go in time.

Anyone else had this problem?

bumbleymummy · 09/09/2012 13:53

I'll let you know! Just got the all clear to start riding again so will hopefully be up and away in the next couple of weeks.
