Horse magazine for 8-yo?

Poledra · 06/06/2012 22:25

My DBro bought DD1 (8yo) a subscription to Pony mag for her birthday. It was a lovely idea, and the subscription is coming up for renewal. However, she's gone off the magazine a bit - I think it's too old for her (more aimed at teenagers and she's quite a young 8). Can anyone suggest a more appropriate magazine for her age and experience (she's only been rising for a year)? Thanks!

I was going to suggest Pony mag - my 7yo loves it! Not sure what else is out there really.

Just googled and found this. Never heard of it before but it looks as though it's aimed at younger children. Worth checking out?

Ponypals. It features ponies, puppies, kittens and rabbits!!! Grin

I was going to suggest I Love Ponies - but see that it's changed its name to Pony Pals - dd loved it when she was 6/7 - she's now 9 and has graduated to Pony magazine

I do wish there was something aimed at pony-obsessed children who don't have their own pony though ... I can always see dd calculating (wrongly) how much it would cost to have a pony in London - she even measured up the back garden once ... and the magazines just fuel that desire :(

Sounds like you've spotted the two mags that are suitable for your DD in this thread. DD likes Pony best but she is 9 now. We also subscribe to Horse and Hound although this is for the whole family and not child-centric.

DD also loves getting Absolute Horse which is a monthly for the Eastern Counties as it has loads of pics of the shows she goes to etc. There may be a similar regional mag for your area.

I would stick with Pony unless you have a really girlie-girl into My Little Pony etc. DD (8) has Pony every month and sometimes we think it is a waste of money as she heads straight for the Ponies for sale section and not much else! But they do offer tremendous advice so she is keeping her old copies to read over and over again.

Also my mum knows the editor well. she knows her stuff and this mag is really worth having and referring back to when needed.

Thanks for replies, all - I went on holiday after posting this so have just got back to it, sorry. I'll talk to DD and see if she wants to keep getting it - I don't think PonyPals is quite her thing, so it's Pony or nothing. I read it too, I have to say - I find it informative enough for me, though I do bypass the articles about 'Why ponies are better than boys' Grin - I know why ponies are better than boys...

Butkin, I'll keep an eye out for Absoute Horse, as we're Eastern region too (but don't do shows) (yet).

it is very exciting to see yourself and your horse's/pony's self in Absolute Horse!

Poledra, Absolute Horse is great and not just because DD is pictured in June Edition!.

It isn't just about shows at all. They have photo spreads on all local (East Anglian) dressage, show jumping, eventing, Hunter Trials etc as well.

There are monthly features on all the Native breeds and lots of specialist articles on veterinary treatment and whatever is special that month ie transport, breeding, clothing, tack etc. Your DD will love looking at all the pictures and will definitely get some inspiration. In addition it does lots of free competitions to win prizes.
