Advice for buying DD a secondhand hacking jacket please.

Hi all,

I've just had the realisation that DD's very first show is next weekend and I still haven't got her a hacking jacket to wear. I have seen some nice ones on Ebay and Preloved but I am confused about sizing. DD is 7yo and on the tall side of average for her age. Should I get a 24" or a 26" jacket for her? I know it depends on the cut of the jacket and we don't really have time to go anywhere and try on.

Any advice gratefully received as usual. Smile

She really needs to try them on. Can you buy both sizes and sell the unwanted one on? Or just go for the one that is on the big side, you can always turn the cuffs up.

I'd say, without knowing your daughter, that the 24 inch would be the one to go for. For showing -particularly in the summer - it is considered smarter to be on the small side rather than baggy.

Our DD was in 24 inch at 7 and we still wedge her into her 24 inch now at 9 ! (February baby).

She has the same jacket in 26 inch and it is just a bit bit but she'll probably be in it by Autumn. We got her a new 25 inch for the new SHP pony and that is actually the right size for her now.

Can you put up a link to the Ebay one (love looking at jackets!).

Here is one I really like the look of on Preloved: www.preloved.co.uk/adverts/show/105595768/childs-foxley-tweed-jacket-26.html

I think I'm going to take her to Countrywide today and try some on there (feels much less cheeky then going to the local saddlers). Thanks for the advice.

Good idea to try jackets on for size. As I say our DD wouldn't be in 26 inch yet (just 9) but of course children differ greatly.

40 pounds looks quite expensive for 2nd had (even a decent make) - try and barter them down. You can get this one in 26 inch - brand new - for less:

Have a look at this because it is a top quality jacket in 24 inch:

This new one would go well with a grey pony and is well priced:

Don't forget that for hunting your DD would normally wear her body protector over her jacket.

Thanks so much for those links Butkin, and it's good to know how much I should be spending for secondhand. I need to get DD another back protector anyway, so can get it fitted with jacket on and off. Off to look through the links now. Smile

Well it turns out that 26" is way too big and even the 24" is roomy. So I have gone for this in 24" and hope it will be ok: jacket

Thanks for all of the advice.

As I said I thought the 24 inch would be the job for a 7yo. However blue wouldn't be correct for showing a M&M. That would be more for show jumping or show ponies. You'd ideally be going for a tweed for showing/hunting.

Ah, didn't realised that M&M had to be shown in a particular colour. Doh.
