timing could not have been worse really ..... I am only four weeks after having fairly major gynea op so needed last few days ( and especially today) like a hole in the head Shock

Friends and I rent land and have four horses between us. Last week horse 1 lame on foreleg but not disastrous. though maybe he slipped hoolying in mud and it seemed better couple days later.

Friday I knew as soon as got to gate of yard summat wrong as my darling coblet did not come to field gate to greet me..... went round corner and she was standing on three legs , one hind waving in the air. Three hours later vet arrived .... thinks it abcess. ( Horse 1 is also lame again , not bad but still lame). Poulticed and left her and companion in stoned yard as little field too muddy. ( she just does not do stables at all and we do yard during winter)

Saturday arrive to change poultice etc......... friends not 2 horse now on three legs as well so phoned friend to come down and vet out again ! Second horse now been pouilticed.

With my horse the Vets duct tape "boot" had come off despite his assurances his never do Hmm .... so I re poultice using boa boot to keep it in place.... ok. Fence of part of the yard where deep water gathered where drain not coping and bit where an attempt to fix drain had been done with gravel ! ( not my choice)

Today ..... oh lordy ....... arrive in storm conditions to find yard more or less flooded, the field gate open and all the horses out together in field swamp .Then as we pass the stables heard a crack and then this massive tree crashes down on the end of the stables. Luckily it was the side branches rather than the main trunk that hit the stables .... but any horse in there would have had a heck of a shock.

Get horses in and both poultices now sodden and boots full of liquid mud (they have drainage holes plus the water in part of the field is over level of boots anyway). Horse also shivering ...... they are normally very waterproof hairies that never need rugs but the gale force wind and stormy rain has got past even their defences.

soooooo Have to tape of part of yard where tree down but still leave some shelter there ( to have a different direction form the field shelter as the wind is blowing right into it ) and will have to now let them stay in the little field as well. Then dry and rug four horses and poultice two (friend never done one before so I did her horse as well to show her how). Her ned does not like plastic bags and never had one put on her feet before so understandably not too keen and waving foot about a bit ... luckily mine could not care less Grin. Hopefully the bags will keep these dressings dry.

Put loaaaaads hay out and feed ......... phew

I thought it was just meant to be raining today .... not gale force winds. Never had any lameness with these horses bar minor lammi and sodding three in one week in the most atrocious weather and when I am crook !!!!

Have had hot shower, and in dry clothes and had Brew

Please, please to the weather controller.... can we have dry weather for a bit . Any and all healing vibes for our neddies will be gratefully received . Thank you.

Oh no ((((hugs)))) it'll most likely be the weather contributing to the abcesses!! I know loads of horses have them :( warm wet weather is perfect breeding ground. About to go and muck out my crew :( poor things!!

tazzle · 29/04/2012 19:47

Thank you horseylady..... yes the wet weather and soft grass does not help at all ........ someone else I know is also nursing a horse with abcess. It does not help that the at the yard a repair job to the drains has left loads of those little scalpings type stones around ..... they been getting stones stuck in white line loads since that was done, I spend ages getting them out.

Total sympathy. As somebody who was poulticing over Easter I feel your pain!

Supposed to be a much nicer and warmer day tomorrow...

tazzle · 29/04/2012 22:17

thank you butkin .... I really do hope its just not raining . dry will do !

We're also poulticing, pony seems to be coming sound, but Friday was a nightmare; we thought (as did our farrier) that it was possibly a fracture, she was so lame.

tazzle · 30/04/2012 16:53

It is a worry isn't it Treble when they are that lame.... mine and friends seem much better today ... hope your pone continues to improve too.

Sad Pony only seemed to be improving because of the bute. We tried her off it yesterday and back to hobbling lame. There's no puss to be seen, our farrier looked at the foot again yesterday and can't find any sign of an abscess. It's definitely not laminitis, so the likely diagnosis is a fracture to the pedal bone. I'm waiting for the vet to call me back to arrange xrays. Poor pony (and it is the one that's the subject of my thread about what to do with gd's pony while she tries out living with her mother)

Sorry, is this a hijack? Perhaps should have started another thread, I lose track of MN ettiquette

tazzle · 01/05/2012 12:23

I think as long as the origional poster does not object its ok ..... and I dont mind Wink

poor pony (((hug)))

lets hope that if it is... it is a simple one and the vet will treat it ... long box rest though :(. I know mine would not tolerate that at all well so it can mean hard decisions....

It seems weird to do so hope so but I do so that it is "just" an abcess taking its time to burst.

Trebles, that's really grim and Tazzle what an absolute nightmare. I'm sick to death of squelching about - dhorse is being absolutely pathetic and standing in the rain (ignoring the nice dry shelter) shivering. I've resorted to putting his heavyweight rug on to try and keep him warm.

Trebles, try not to panic as it could be something much simpler - I really hope so.

Callisto · 02/05/2012 09:31

We've had several field horses lame from abcesses this last couple of months. It isn't always obvious that there is one, and they don't necessarily drain loads of pus either.

I hope your pony is ok Trebles.

tazzle · 02/05/2012 16:21

Its weird...... both gals are now much better with nothing other than some poulticing .... no antibiotics or anything else systemic. No signs pus draining (though could have).

Ah well ...... can relax a little more for the moment ..... well hoping to as river is bursting over the banks near the two roads I can take to get to the fields.... just waiting for the water to make its way off the welsh hills now and the roads to flood Confused

I am usually a quite energetic and "get on with it" person but it takes three times a long to do anything atm and am fed up gettnig soaked ggrrrrr

good luck again treble wih the x rays (((o)))
