I've seen a gorgeous colt advertised. It doesn't sound like anything i've not handled before. He'll make a beautiful little pony. 11 months old.

Problem is he's a colt.

Nowhere round my way will take them. Even the ones that used to wont take one anymore.

I was thinking of looking into renting a bit of land myself but i've no idea where to look?

I could have him gelded but the vet would need to take him in to do it as they've not descended fully, So i would need a couple of weeks to organise that...

any help advice from other colt owners?

Can you get his owners to held him before you collect him?

Preloved for land to rent-if there is nothing listed near you you could always put an ad on,it is free.No advice on colts I'm afraid as I know nothing about them.

Saggy - The vet has said his nuts havent come down enough to do it without taking him in overnight.

Ive asked her to keep me informed over the weekend, She has a couple of other people viewing. Apparently he is quite coltish, So no idea weather these people will be any good for him.

If shes still got him by weekend i'm going to ask her if it would be possible to geld him beforehand.

Poor dear has never had a colt before and the woman she bought him off talked her into buying him instead of the mare she'd originally gone to see, And he is ruining her confidence.

That's sad for her. My homebred colt is in a herd of mares, and the have taught him his manners beautifully, but I've met plenty of obnoxious ones too! My boy is a bit shy with his nuts as well, the vet can feel them, but he does suck them up and hide them!! There was no mention of having to take him in!
I'd definitely see if the owner would let you do this from her yard, or even take him in from there, then collect him from the vet and take him home for a few days box rest.

TheQueenOfDiamonds · 19/04/2012 17:45

She said he was brilliant and playing and a gem with the breeder. So i'm thinking it's a confidence issue. I know how little it can take to start your confidence on a downward spiral, And they're such clever animals they pick up on it so easily.

He's not turned out with any other horses on the yard he's on at the moment.

That's what i was thinking, I feel a bit cheeky and like i'[m taking advantage of her if i ask her to geld him.. I don't want her to put herself out out of desperation to get rid but i've rang absolutely everywhere round here and theres no way anyone will have him on with his nuts.

I wouldn't mind paying for it to be done though, I just dont want her to think im messing her around etc.

Wouldn't anywhere take him if you came home via the vet?

TheQueenOfDiamonds · 19/04/2012 19:10

Yeah but they won't even reserve while they're still attached, They just said ring back when they're off. So it looks like i'm going to have to wait until saturday, See if he's still with the lady and go from there.

Will just have to hope that if we do end up going down the gelding before moving him somewhere local has a space!

I'd see if she will geld him at before you get him. You could always offer to pay her livery until he can come home.
In reference to finding somewhere to rent, my usual method is to drive round the local area, and knock on doors. If you see an empty plot of land, ask the neighbouring houses who owns it, and when you find them, ask if its rentable. My last two paddocks were found that way. You can also look on Google Earth for likely paddocks. If the people you speak to don't want to rent, ask them if they know someone who does. you'll be surprised what comes up.

I had a look on google earth and from what i can see there are quite a few unused fields (Well, They dont seem to have anything in them... I'm a total novice with this though, If id had this problem back home i'd have chucked him on my mates field... I have been known to turn up outside her house complete with horse in trailer...) Weather they're suitable for grazing or not i don't know but i think i will get my mum to have a drive round saturday (Her GF knows the area better than i do and is more likely to know how to get to them etc, I will just get hopelessly lost!).

If you want to have a look; maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&cp=8&gs_id=u&xhr=t&q=wa12+8lf&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.,cf.osb&biw=1280&bih=933&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wl
