DD (12) has just started riding a pony for someone, having spent nearly 6 years riding round in effing circles at the local riding school. She has had a couple of rides when we have been on holiday over open moorland, beaches etc, and a 3 day riding holiday in Anglesey.

A friend of hers has also been riding someone else's horse, so today they set out for the first time on their own unsupervised. They were so excited. I drove them round the route yesterday. Friend stayed over at ours last night. Much giggling and laughter all evening as they planned their outing.

DH dropped both girls at their respective yards, helped DD to tack up and watched her ride off to meet her friend.

45 minutes later they were both off. Sad Total chaos on the bridlepath apparently. Friend wanted to canter to get rid of some steam (blame the chap she has been riding out with for that notion). DD struggling to control her pony. Eventually DD's pony bolted, onto a road in a housing estate. Friend fell off on bridlepath, and DD threw herself off her pony onto the pavement as they were approaching a woman with two small children! Fortunately DD's pony then stopped, and friend's pony stopped with hers.

The first question I asked when DD phoned me in tears was "Have you got both ponies?"

Both girls bruised. One of the ponies has a cut which may need stitching.

I just feel so sorry for the pair of them. Talk about coming down with a bump!

Grin I used to sing a hymn when riding my mad TB mare down scary roads.

Give me hope in my heart in the morning - with a chorus of sing hosanna - people must have thought I was mad!

I don't think 12 is too young to ride out unsupervised, provided she has the right pony. Rather than teaching her what to do if a pony bolts, I'd be much happier if she had a pony that was practically guaranteed not to. Do teach her as well of course, but ideally she won't need the info.

Obviously there are unforeseen situations with the most bombproof of animals, but I'd want a proper safe and sensible ride for a 12 year old with barely any hacking experience.

DD rode out on the pony yesterday, and even had a little canter up a green lane (she was at the front). Very proud of her for getting back on, and at least it proves she is committed.

Good for her! It's these things that make a rider of you.

sanguinechompa · 15/04/2012 15:14

That's great news Exit - well done to your dd.

And arf at all singing on horseback ...going to try that.

AllPastYears · 15/04/2012 15:36

I don't think the singing works, personally! I was in the middle of some song when my pony got scared, whipped round, and left me wrapped round his neck Confused...

Booboostoo · 15/04/2012 18:44

Well done DD! She'll get her confidence back in no time!

Another vote for the singing! It helps regulate the rider's breathing and therefore her heart beat and that way it can help horses that take their cues from their riders. Also good fun...at least for the person doing the singing!

Hmm, yes it's all very well singing when you are in the middle of nowhere but try doing it while riding round a housing estate and you get some very funny looks (especially with my singing voice Grin).

I sometimes recite poems under my breath because it gives me something else to think about, especially If I get a bit stuck for the next line. Dhorse seems to like it, I think he can hear even if passers-by can't.

Pixel · 15/04/2012 20:49

Hopefully when people see my lips moving they assume I'm murmuring instructions to dhorse, and don't run off to phone the men in white coats!

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 15/04/2012 22:32

I used to cluck like a chicken. Confused

I too am a singer , ever since I got bought a welsh x Arab 4 yr old , for my first pony on my 14th birthday ! It always worked for me . Still sing to my big horse now, but I fear his purebred ears are shocked at being assailed by my dulcet tones .

Mind you , it does tend to be Nellie the elephant ....

Mirage · 19/04/2012 12:56

We sing too or do times tables as we are going along.Dpony must know her tables up to 6 off by heart now.Grin

We should start a choir - call Gareth Malone!

Update on DD - she decided to go for her weekly riding lesson yesterday evening and was bucked off - bless!
