I have embarked on a demudding mission, and the first of the rugs is in the washing machine, ready for a dose of reproofing later.
Head collars and numnahs will go in too, then I might clean some tack properly later.

Then, this weekend, its ponys turn Grin

Houseproud I'm not. Horseproud ? Yes indeed Grin

Do you wash the outdoor rugs? In your own machine?
Our horses (TBs) have been out the last 4 nights (on the trot) rug less! In March!
It is like high summer without the flies!

CMOTDibbler · 28/03/2012 14:00

Yes, in a special hair catching, non banging on the drum with clips bag. But dponys rugs are only 5' and either no or light fill.

It is gorgeous isn't it ! But I'm sure the flies will wake up soon. Though I now know where the fly spray (I won 10 litres of it last year, so plenty left), fly rug and mask are

how do they fit in the machine - or is this your sec A? obviously not a 6'9 super thick new zealand?

did brief calculation and concluded cheaper to replace than repair and reproof :( so many rips - but we have been rug free for a little while now, and the horses are so fat, I was hoping they would jog round the field to keep warm at night Blush

CMOTDibbler · 28/03/2012 14:30

Sec A.

I used stormsure rug glue on one ripped rug, and its worked really well. Worth a try, and maybe hose down rug in the garden ?

Or sneak it into the laundrette's massive machine when the lady isn't looking and hotfoot it away...

DedalusDigglesPocketWatch · 28/03/2012 14:45

We always used to wash the rugs in a trough, then scrub, rinse and hang over the fence.

Not going to do mine yet as there is said to be a cold spell over easter (talk of snow!) but next sunny spell it am out there!

Did oil a bridle yesterday though...

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 28/03/2012 14:58

I was all my rugs in my machine when DP is at work. No ba, just jam them im! (all smaller than 5'3)
Pressure washers work quite well too.

PaulaMummyKnowsBest · 01/04/2012 18:16

what do you use to wash them in and what do you use to re proof them?

CMOTDibbler · 01/04/2012 18:19

I used Nikwax rug wash and rug proof. I bought a twin pack on ebay.
Now I just need to put them away properly...

Ours are still rugged up ahead of the snow forecast for this week. As I just got back from Dubai last night the impending weather is grim although has been nice since I landed.

We'll wait until they are fully out - sometime in May - and then we'll pack rugs off to Horsecare in Newmarket.

We do wash their stable rugs at home though - usually thrown in with bandages and numnahs.

Pixel · 02/04/2012 19:57

Ours are still dumped in the hay store, we may need them again yet. Dhorse has done some serious moulting so he won't have much protection if the weather forecast is correct, although he's been happily out nekkid for the last couple of weeks and still looks a bit lardy!

I know for certain don't think our rugs will fit in our washing machine so they will just get a good brush off before they are put away for the summer. I washed one last year so I could send it for repairs and the only place to do it was in the bath. Never again!

Treblesallround · 04/04/2012 13:17

All our rugs are back from the cleaners. And the rain sheets are all back on the horses now so will have to be washed again in the summer. I wish I hadn't been taken in by all that sunshine!
