We sold DD's lovely, lovely welsh mountain pony a month ago as he was getting on a bit and not so keen anymore on hunting/jumping. Actually, I fib. he LOVED hunting and jumping, but he was getting tired and unwell with it. He's gone to a wonderful local home where he'll be petted all through retirement.

A family member has been searching for a pony for DD - something younger, a bit livelier, one that will grow with DD in ability and love pony club camps and rallies and hunting next winter.

Family member (a trainer) has found a pony for DD to try after rejecting quite a few before we met them... BUT, he's a coloured cob and I am a bit Hmm. I just don't like them! I don't like coloured horses full stop really. But in other ways, he is perfect: a reluctant sale due to redundancy, only 7, beautifully trained and handled, a known quantity, loves pony clubs and hunting.

He does have an absolutely AWFUL name as well though - really terrible (which even if we changed it for day to day would still be announced at every show, etc), and he is on the absolute upper limit of what I am willing to pay for a child's pony.

We are obviously going to see him on Sunday and DD can have a good ride. But I am really not sure. And that is silly to have that prejudice I know, but when this much money (and it is a lot) and effort and love is involved, I want to feel 100% committed myself as, although DD is fabulous and getting good at pony care, it's still a huge commitment as a parent Grin.

Can anyone either sympathise, tell me lovely stories about coloured cobs, or give me a gentle slap....

Thank you everyone Smile

DD won't get a ride now for a week, and she's itching to see him again.

Unfortunately, the last pony club rally was cancelled due to the snow and so this week's has been changed to a jumping week and I think that would be very unfair to launch them both into jumping so soon (he's a big jumper, even over poles, and my sil "has yet to find his limit" as he's never refused anything) so she's sitting this week out.

There are massive advantages to having a horse/farming family when it comes to small children and ponies. There is no way we'd be able to commit to this, either time or money wise, without DH's family and a nice, handy farm to keep him on. DD knows she's very lucky and in return as she gets bigger, she'll be an unpaid helper on the farm Wink

I am very happy Grin I can't believe I was anti-coloured cobs now...!

Cobs rock, they are so much fun. Safe and steady but generally enough pony blood to make them clever and a bit cheeky. Good that he's already hogged, cobby coloureds tend to be pretty hairy and unless you are showing as a traditional or native it's a load easier to shave it all off, especially the legs as horses with a lot of feather can get a really nasty mite that lives in the feathers and causes the skin to crack and be very sore.

Safe and steady? Wish someone had told my cob that! Grin

wow, he is a cracker, he is going to be perfect for your daughter,
your only problem at shows is going to be made bankcrupt by all the entry fees as he will be eligble for so many differnt classes, cob, child's hunter, working, coloured, you will be spoilt for choice!

as a judge at pony club events, i have noticed a lot more children riding cobs, they seem to be moving away from the breedy types,
having a cob especially a 14 hd plus means you can have a ride out too when you want to, a mum and daughter pony is always good,
embrace cob, embrace the wonderful world of the cob.

Hurray congratulations! You can tell us his funny name now too!

Thank you again Grin DD had a lovely ride on him this week and we are trying to get the saddle man to come and watch her and sell us a smaller saddle.
