Having to come to terms with the fact that my dp won't last much longer.
She was collapsed in her stable this morning my dad managed to get her back up, ha the vet out and found out that she's got cancer of the tongue and her back legs are getting weaker. He also said that he thinks she's about 50 !!!!!! We knew she was old but thought late 30's. Had her since I was 14 the perfect pony she's a 13.2 palamino completely bomb proof. Would jump anything and was faster that all of the other horses an ponys Iv ever had or rode with. She was my little pocket rocket Iv so many great memories.
She's had an amazing life competed and been loved by everyone that has met her or had the pleasure to own her. Love her so much ;(

Sad.She sounds amazing and is obviously much loved.Is she comfortable at the minute?

Callisto · 18/12/2011 12:20

Awful for you, but have you not had her put down?

CatPussRoastingByAnOpenFire · 18/12/2011 18:35

50!!! You must have looked after her amazingly! We had a 34 yo, and he was a total crock!! He'd been decomposing from the inside out for years, and we were sure it was only bloody minded was keeping him standing!! 50 is incredible! Well done you! I'm so sorry she is nearing the end, but it sounds like you have given her a wonderful life, and it's time to let her go. {{hugs}}

Not had her put down at the min the vet said she's in no pain, we are (selfishly) hoping she makes it past Christmas and also that she goes peacefully one night.
My first pony lived till 37 only had to put him down cos he had colic and twisted gut apart from that he was a fit at the younger ones. I only stopped riding her 7 years ago (didnt think she was as old at that) even tho she was 13.2 I was 18 I'm 5ft 5 and was about 9 to 9half stone but she wasn't a novice ride at all, and was faster and fitter than my mums 9yr old. We will all be lost with out her especially my mums horse

Not being in pain doesn't necessarily mean her quality of life is good enough though - and keeping her going for Christmas is a bit selfish. If the animal is suffering it is suffering no matter what the day is. That sounds harsh I know, but you must put her interests first, the chances of her going in her sleep are unlikely (although not impossible) and if you're hoping for that to avoid having to call the vet and having her put down then I think you're looking at it from the wrong angle. It is a horrible decision to make and I feel every sympathy for you but it is your responsibility to do the right thing for her. She's served you all well and obviously been looked after well and I hope the end is peaceful when it comes.

If she was collapsed in the stable and has cancer of the tongue then I think it is probably time to have her put down now. Don't wait until Christmas or hope that she just doesn't wake up - that is a cop out. If she really means this much to you then do the right thing and have her put to sleep. Also, I don't believe the vet - cancer is painful. Has your vet a vested interest in keeping her going for as long as possible (by selling you meds/treatments)?

The best thing you can do for your princess is to give her a good death - not going down and not being able to get up, thrashing about in the stable without you knowing, exhausting herself and finally dying. It is incredibly painful decision to make and I have been there myself with my old pony but I promised myself that I wouldn't shy away from doing what is best for her and not myself (which would have been pumping her with painkillers, trips to the vet hospital with the end result unlikely to change).

Unfortunately it is all part and parcel of being a kind, responsible owner - taking the good times with the bad Sad.

Iv been up today and she's eating no problem and Trotted up to the gate. We know if she collapses again that she will be up down no question about it. Just bad time of year to have to do it. Everyone loves her and her stable is across the yard from the front door and there field is next to the garden will be a huge loss for the hole family even my dad and oh love her (dads a typical farmer cant stand horses they make a mess and my oh doesn't understand why you would get on a horse when a car can get u there quicker).We asked the vet what to do and he assured use she was in no pain.

Well if she is eating that is a good sign. Best wishes to you and your DPony.
