It depends on the weather. At the moment I think 3pm is fine. Personally, if the horse has any kind of a clip, I think a couple of hours out in really cold and wet weather is more than enough. It also depends on what sort of grazing you have - ours is standing water and fetlock deep mud after the last couple of days so all of the horses have stayed in.

3 isn't too bad. Ours come in between 5 and 6 but we are mean and horrible! Grin

CatPussRoastingByAnOpenFire · 14/12/2011 21:54

Oh, and they go out unless it's torrential outside! If there is a frost down anyone with a history of laminitis stays in until it thaws, and they get straw or crap hay on the floor if the grass is under snow!

Of my 4, 2 are still out 24/7 as its been quite dry. The other two have been blanket clipped (though it's grown out a lot now) and they go out at 8am and in at about 8pm but have good rugs on. I don't like them in too long as they are better off breathing fresh air as much as possible. I think 3pm is a bit early really, unless the weather is foul & you will also get through more hay as they will need another net at 8pm.

frostyfingers · 15/12/2011 08:21

My fully clipped TB is out 24/7 - he has a Weatherbeeta Orican heavyweight rug, Snuggy Hood (which he hates) and is as warm as toast. It is getting a bit soggy round here, but he seems happier out than in. He comes in for his breakfast and a bit of a dry but otherwise is fine out. The field is a bit wet, but there are plenty of hedges and he has access to a shelter (which he doesn't use) and hay on the ground.

I just take it day by day and if he starts to look miserable, get cold or lose condition then I can bring him in - he'll be for one night next week as I need him clean and dry for hunting!

Olderyetwilder · 15/12/2011 08:22

The two ponies (one clipped, one not) turn out at 6.30am, rugged according to weather, come in about 5pm when I get to the yard after work. The two horses live out all year (well rugged as needed).

I'm with ponyofdoom, I like them to have fresh air and walk around, especially the 18 year old as I think it's better for him to keep moving. That said, if he looks miserable or it's foul weather the yard owner brings him in earlier. The other pony won't let anyone except us catch her so she has to wait until we get there

Only started getting them in since Monday. Even though they are show horses they prefer to be out until the icy rain starts. They come in around 6pm and go out around 7.30am.

One has a bib clip but the others are unclipped. They all wear rugs inside and out. The others will get a clip next Tuesday.

They will stay in all day on Monday when we go to Olympia.

Mirage · 15/12/2011 22:25

Dpony will not be stabled at all and lives out all year round. On Tuesday night it was really windy and rainly,so I left the field gate open so she could go in the stable if she wanted, but the silly old thing still stayed out all night. She is unclipped, and at 22,I don't think I'll change her ways now.

grafit · 16/12/2011 11:20

Ours is out 24/7 with access to a field shelter. He only has a raincoat on as his mediumweight rug tore and the new one isnt coming until Monday. He's a hardy new forest though so should be ok.

LisaD1 · 16/12/2011 12:19

Our are out anywhere between 8 and 10am (the later time being the weekend as we ride first) and then coming in between 3 and 4pm.

They live out quite a bit in the summer but both hang around the gate to come in during winter and I like them tucked up in their pj's. I'm sure they wouldn't really care if they were out longer though

ManateeEquineOhara · 16/12/2011 22:34

The mare is in tonight for the first time all year, although she will mostly live out. Other years she has been stabled and I have bought her in any time between 3 and 7 depending on whatever else I am doing, and also on the weather.

Depends if your horse is the type to prefer to stay out, or who prefers their stable. I have always felt 3 is quite early to bring in regularly though.

Shutupanddrive · 18/12/2011 17:43

Out at about 9am, in at about 4pm
