Does anybody know and stables in/near Cambridge with larger mounts?

I tried to book a riding lesson today only to be told I am too fat for their ponies, at 14 stone. Apparently their upper weight limit is 12.5 stone.

I was wondering if anyone knew of a local stables with bigger horses that might be able to give me some lessons while I work at getting some weight off? Alternatively I am happy to help muck out, clean tack and so on in return for a bit of an informal lesson (I rode a bit as a child although I would still describe myself as a beginner).

Sorry I don't but why not take the Yellow Pages and ring around. While smaller ponies are used more often and are less costly to keep there is bound to be a yard with a larger RS horse. We managed to find a RS with a Shire x for my DP who was 17 stone at the time so it's by no means impossible, but they were a RS specialising in adults rather than children.

If you class yourself as a beginner be a bit weary of a share at this moment (might be fine in a few months after you have 'found your feet'). Very, very few privately owned horses would be suitable for a beginner, with the right facilities (fenced in arena) and an owner capable of giving you advice.

Bridge Farm at Cottenham has some big beasts - have you tried them? (Google for number).

Where did you go? Haven't been for a while but Sawston Riding School had horses easily capable of taking 14 stone (tel 01223 835198).

Old Tiger at Soham have weight bearing mounts.

large mount does not neccessarily mean that it can take a greater load on the back.

You are probably right about a share - this is what I did as a kid but the person I shared with had a grown up sister who was an instructor so obviously that was going to work on the tuition front! I had forgotten that bit.

I learned to ride at Old Tiger Stables in Soham! Never did me any harm....
