Any tips on reducing mud lumps in mane of grass kept pony ?

Dpony loves to roll, and suddenly we seem to have a lot of mud ! He has a very full mane, but its suddenly full of lumps of mud and looks more like dreadlocks than a mane.

Its taking forever to sort it out, and its something I could do without tbh. Am loathe to put him in a full neck rug yet as he'll be out all winter and he doesn't need to for warmth (is a section A and won't be clipped).

Any ideas on things to do to help the situation ? Am using mane conditioner already.

pig oil?

I only have full neck rugs, you can get light and no fill versions

Show Sheen. Not cheap but such a tiny amount needed it lasts for ever. Everything just slides off. Great for legs and tails too.

Otherwise, plait it (unrolled) if it's a native pony, or keep it very well pulled if not.

baby oil.

Cowboy magic.

Do not under any circumstances apply to the saddle area unless you are in training for cirque du soleil.

I second pig oil - I have just purchased a gysy vanner with full feather and long mane. The seller told me to use pig oil and it has made my life so much easier!

A lot of the mane detanglers seem to help - but are not good if you plan to plait!

I'll try pig oil then ! Nice and cheap as a starter, then will do show sheen/ cowboy magic if necessary. Thank you all !

The only plait he can have is a running one as his mane is huge (and beautiful when clean), but if we were going anywhere that plaits were required he'd need washing anyway so not an issue.

He does have a full neck rug with no fill, but his neck is quite cosy already with all that mane and he gets a bit hot if its on before it is really cold. I guess I could plait it to reduce bulk then put the rug on

Cheap turnout hood, Mark Todd do one for about £30. They keep them clean and make your mane nice and flat.

CMOTdibbler · 06/12/2011 13:20

Are turnout hoods OK for permanently out ponies ? I was a bit concerned about them catching and turning round or being wet and needing changing every day.

Currently, dpony has big chunky plaits (with loads of mane conditioner in), a full neck rug, and baby oil on the top of his mane, forelock and round his face and chin. This makes him pretty easy to clean off. His tail (now actually touching the ground) and legs are getting 7 day MudAway so the mud baubles don't form

Tail bags are great! Plait the tail below the dock, pop it in the bag, pass the little strap through the plait and do up the popper! You can leave it on for weeks!
