Any idea how to get a white tail white again?

Hi all. I have recently acquired a lovely piebald cob mare. She is in need of some sprucing and her tail is yellow in parts from urine and poo and lack of shampoo! Any ideas as to how to return it to its former glory? Someone has suggested mild bleach but it sounds a bit iffy to me!

TIA!

Fairy liquid is very useful, and if all else fails, sheath cleaning shampoo is great. It really cuts through the grease and wee!

Tresseme deep cleaning shampoo (green label, get the litre size from Sainsbos for maximum economy), followed by Touch of Silver weekly treatment. Really made our grey pony (kept on red clay land and normally looks palamino) sparkling white

Fairy liquid-I have used mild bleach like milton and just dipped the very yellow ends in it.An ex army vet told me to use Persil, and to plait it as it looks whiter when crinkly after plaiting.

I had greys for years. If they got really mucky in winter I would wash them in something strong like fairy liquid, condition with a cheap hair conditioner to make them easier to handle and then rinse with this stuff. You would think that adding blue to a yellow tail would turn it green, but it doesn't, it cancels out a yellow tinge and leaves a white tail looking slivery-white.

Oh gosh! A blue rinse - it's like re-visiting Jilly's Gymkhana all over again! Grin

You can get blue shampoo for grey horses as well if you don't mind shelling out. I think I'd go for the Persil option!

The stud where I used to work used to use blue bag on their greys. I was going to suggest it, but I thought you would all laugh!! Blush

If you have a yellow tinge it is a chemical stain and no amount of cleaning will totally shift it.
I have a grey mare and they just wee down their tails Hmm

What you have to do is all of the above and then tail bag it or leave it in a plait. You then need to wash it at least once a week and eventually the yellow will all grow out and you will have a lovely tail again. The blue shampoo is amazing stuff - also big thumbs up for the deep cleaning Tresseme

My mare is also a cob so it helps that I keep her tail short

Ahem, vanish oxi action for whites..... Only on the bottom bit, make sure it doesnt get on the dock. Nuke the tail with willie wash to get the grease off (or fairy non bio works too) then dunk tail in vanish dissolved in hand hot water. Leave it dunked in for as long as you can hold the bucket up. Rinse thoroughly and slap conditioner on, then tail plait and tail bag. Repeat weekly until it's White.

Can you still get blue bags? That's what I always used to use - admittedly 20 years ago now

OOh, yes, we had "dolly blue" got it from a really retro shop in Hereford. A bag od blue chalky stuff that you swished into the rinsing water. It was amazing stuff! Only have bays now, sooooo much easier.
