Horse Camping

Does anyone have much experience with camping with horses? We are going to be going into the wilderness this fall and I think I know what I need, but if anyone has any tips, I would greatly appreciate them! We are lucky enough to live in a area that has yurts scattered about in the woods, and one can rent them out for a night or a week. www.southwestnordiccenter.com/yurtdescriptions.htm
Horses are apparently welcome to stay as well! There won't be shelter for them except trees, (so we can also highline) but there should be grazing.

Again, if anyone can share tips, I have been back country with horses, but I have always had a guide/wrangler, I have never been the wrangler!

Also, the yurts are primarily for skiers, but in the fall when there is no snow, it's good for horses. If there is a huge snowfall, we won't be going!

Hi Toxic, don't have much experience I'm afraid, although I've recently discovered a campsite in Exmoor where they can accomodate your own horse, which sounds very tempting if I can ever afford to transport dhorse all that way!
I hope you have a great time. Smile

Thanks Pixel, I think it will go well. I took the horses out yesterday for a hack, rode one and ponies the other, trying to get them fit for the camping!

The idea of getting to go camping with your own horse sound fab to me!

Oh that looks FUN Envy

can't you go in the snow, take plenty of hay?

ToxicMoxie · 29/10/2011 23:07

We could go in the snow, I thought it might be easier to get water by just melting the snow in the yurt. We would have to bring some kind of hay pellets I think, since they are very strict about not bringing in weeds with forage.

It does look like fun, shame Im a big fat coward!

It's more like a log cabin with insulated canvas walls. And no snakes in winter, yay! Lot's of bighorn sheep too, don't forget the fun stuff!

Also, it has a wood stove in to keep you warm at night...
