Jills Gymkhana is mine, first I ever read, and the one that made me pony mad!

I loved Fly-by-Night and The Team but went off Ruth a bit in the later stories - she just got together with Penn, abandoned all her horsey dreams and became a good little wifey supporting her husband while he pursued his dream Hmm

I also loved the My Friend Flicka series, and the Monica Edwards Romney Marsh and Punchbowl Farm series. I was obsessed with Wish For a Pony when I was little - I so wanted it to happen to me!

Read hundreds and hundreds of Pullein-Thompson ones Grin

Did anyone else read the Silver Brumby series?

AlpinePony · 07/08/2011 07:07

There seems to be a common theme here, those of us not lucky enough to have had our own ponies spent far too much time in the library! ;)

Still, as a result got a good job and now have a pony. :)

FannyPriceless · 07/08/2011 08:48

But I did have a pony and was still obsessed by pony books! I don't know anyone more obsessed than me - except Ruth Badger, obviously.Smile

I remember age 11 constantly bringing my own books to school and asking permission from my teacher for them to be the next book for my class book review. I have a very clear memory of him rolling his eyes and saying through clenched teeth, 'OK, but this is definitely the LAST pony book I'll approve.'Grin

Llanarth Did you know that Joanna Cannan was the P-T sisters' mother? I also have A Pony for Jean.

Llanarth · 07/08/2011 20:07

No, I didn't know that Fanny! The old copy of A Pony for Jean I have (which I picked up from a jumble sale no doubt) has a handwritten address in the front (somewhere in East Sussex) and I wrote to the address when I was aged about 10 on the off-chance that the previous owner would still live there! No reply though Sad

Did anyone have a pony annual - I expect they came out each year but I remember one which I think had a yellowy cover with a girl with a hairband holding the muzzle of a grey pony on it. Inside there was a double-page spread of a photo of a palamino pony in a paddock at dusk, with a lit-up cottage in the background. That photo fuelled SO many of my dreams.....!

Ponders · 07/08/2011 20:14

Did anybody answer about the houseboat one? Not sure if it's the same but \link{http://www.amazon.co.uk/Horse-House-Puffin-William-Corbin/dp/0140303960/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1312744382&sr=8-4\Horse in the House} ended up stolen & hidden on a houseboat?

Girl is called Melanie though, not October - horse is Orbit. It's a wonderful book with some very funny bits

Ponders · 07/08/2011 20:16

I also loved the Jill books, & Pullein-Thompsons, & also Monica Edwards - hers weren't pony books as such but had loads of ponies in them. There were 2 sets of characters, who lived on Romney Marsh & in the Devil's Punchbowl, but they did get together eventually iirc.

annoyingdevil · 07/08/2011 21:13

KM Peyton was the best IMO, just loved her pony stories. Liked the Jill books too, and does anyone remember the Ginny books? Can't remember the author

Pixel · 07/08/2011 21:26

Ginny at Finmory, Patricia Leich (sp?).
Does anyone remember Monica Dickens' World's end series? I used to love those. Lots of kids whose parents were away and they were forever taking in rescued ponies and teaching disabled children to ride behind their parents' backs and stuff like that.

Pixel · 07/08/2011 21:30

this will give you the idea.

Pixel · 07/08/2011 21:42

Ooh just looked on Amazon and there are loads of them on there. Damn! Dd is too old for me to say I'm buying them for her. What to do? Grin

Mirage · 07/08/2011 21:51

I found a Jill book for dd1 today-a bargain at 10p!

Pixel · 07/08/2011 21:52

I look in charity shops but never ever find any good pony books Sad.

Mirage · 07/08/2011 22:04

I went to a car boot sale,we are lucky enough to live in a very horsey area,so a fair bit of kit, books ect turns up.If there are any books in particular you'd like,I'm happy to look out for them for youy.

I bought a new velvet riding hat for me for £10,and nearly got a new £110 body protector for £5,sadly it was too big,but got chatting to the seller, who has a smaller one at home, plus lots of other stuff as she has given up riding.I've got her phone number and am going to pop round and see what she's got.

[I'm planning some riding lessons for me - the dds are having far too much fun and I'm missing out] GrinSlippery slope springs to mind......

Pixel · 07/08/2011 22:18

That's kind of you. I haven't been to a car boot for ages, we can't move in this house for 'stuff' as it is. Grin Well done on your bargains!

candr · 09/08/2011 21:26

Exit it was called A Horse in the House, I love most of the books mentioned but my favourites are the Silver Brumby books (Australian)

AnnaBegins · 09/08/2011 21:41

Yes, I read the Silver Brumby books (and recently bought them off amazon to read again!) Loved the Jinny and Shantih ones, and Flambards.

Does anyone remember a book about a racehorse foal bought by a girl's drunken Irish uncle, which she stabled in a railway tunnel blocked up with straw bales, who ends up being discovered and raced by the rich boy at the hall, who she falls in love with? (I think there's a brother called Sam who's in love with her too or something). Ends with him taking the horse to compete in america. Read it when I was a kid and have no idea of the author/title!

MissTapestry · 26/09/2011 10:11

Ooh, AnnaBegins, I remember that book, the brother was called Straw or something? Dammit, it's bugging me now... DARKLING!? :D

MissTapestry · 26/09/2011 10:16

I also love loved the Saddle Club, my favourite was Autumn Trail or something, where Lisa had to make the decision to have Pepper put down. I'm crying just thinking about it!
Another fave was the pony club camp series, with Alice and Saffron, and Hanif and Jupiter. Or am I getting confused with Noel, Henry, Christopher and Sweet William, and the Major? Because I loved them too :o I really need to clam down, this thread has got me all excited.

zipzap · 26/09/2011 10:19

Does Riders by Jilly Cooper count? Grin
