I have managed to persuede dh-- decided to think about owning a horse. It won't be until next year so i can have a little 'horse egg' stashed away in case of emergency etc.

This year i am riding regularly and getting very excited about it.

So please tell me all i need to know, i have worked with horses a long time ago. I know owning is very different to working with so any help appreciated.

Also, find yourself a knowledgeable horsey mentor. Pick their brains in everything, then gradually evolve yourself your own plan. If you can find this person and share a paddock with them, even better.

I'm Envy of your set up saggy, it's lovely there.

As for hay, I pay £5 per horse per week and it's unlimited - think will even out across year, the two who live out had a section each (big bale) am and pm. Have stopped haying the field at night now as they were just ignoring it, can't compete with new grass.

Thanks Mitchy, I love it.
The most we have paid for hay in these parts is £5 a bale. £10 seems like a total rip off. You can buy whole loads from Norfolk at less per bale than that!

Thing is, our farmer is keeping it as cheap as he can, there just isn't any hay around here. I've known him over 20 years and he's always been very fair with hay prices (we buy from elsewhere as well and know the local going rates) so I know he isn't ripping us off. It's driving him mad too because he has nearly 100 horses at his other yard and he's been tearing his hair out trying to keep them all supplied throughout the winter.

Next time I see him I'll have to tell him there is plenty in Norfolk. Smile
