Ok, stupid question of the day! Can a gelding "perform"??

So, our gelding is only young (5yo). He was gelded at 18months (before we got him) and has been kept away from mares his whole life (just the way the previous yard was run).

Anyway... one week into the new yard (mixed fields) and he is settling in well, a bit too well perhaps? Today he mounted one of the mares in his field, apparently he performed fully and there was a lot of, ahem, fluid around afterwards!

So, is this possible of a gelding? Could he actually be a hidden rig? If he is a hidden rig can he sire a foal?

Finally, is there anything that can be done to stop this? He shares a field with one young mare who is the pride and joy of her owner and is intended for a full showing life. If he mounted her then my life would not be worth living! (Although I can understand why she would be cross!)

At this yard there is not any easy way to segregate mares and geldings although the owner would sort something if she had to it would cause a lot of disruption!

Thank you for any thoughts, ideas or advice that you can offer. Smile

Yes they can and it's perfectly normal. In fact, it's the mares that allow this, if they didn't the gelding wouldn't do it. You could contact Crossgates Farm, they have a remedy for this (just google them). It has to be given to the mare and gelding. The other mares will be rejecting his advances you see...

My old gelding was particularly taken with a palomino mare. I never saw him 'in the act' but when she had her rug re-proofed with bright blue spray from the camping shop, guess what colour his belly and front legs were when he came in...Blush

Thanks for that both of you! Very helpful to know it can be normal anyway! To be fair the other mare in the field seems to have his number, she seems to go into the feild aiming a good swipe at him before making some marvelous faces at him whenever he gets closer than half a field away Grin

I will have a look at the remedy, thank you Lucy. I am sort of hoping the mare just gets cross with him and gets him told so he just gives up on the idea lol!

Problem is, she could be inviting it Lowreg, which is why the remedy is called something like "mares and geldings". Make sure the mare's owner knows that she too will have to put drops in her horse's hussy's feed. Grin

There is always a chance he is a rig too though. I think that if your gelding has been seen fully covering someone elses mare, then you need to be 100% certain that he is not fertile. You should at least get advice from a vet. Would you want the consequences of your horse having impregnated these mares?

LowRegNumber · 23/02/2011 18:16

Thanks for that Saggy, I have spoken to the vet and it turns out that he was tested to prve the gelding worked fully so we are in the clear there, thank goodness!

It does seem to have settled on its own now luckily. The mare is back to grumpy normal and letting him know that he is out of order!

there is something really sad about seedless gelding fluid isn't there?

I have a similar problem with my naughty 4 yo 11hh gelding trying to mount our aged 32 yo 13.2hh. He tries to mount her and bite her and chase her about and she does not like it one bit. He also tries to "play" bite and chase, my 16hh gelding. Is this just being young and frisky, and will it pass? We have had to separate them which is incovenient because if I put the 13.2 on her own, my 16hh goes mad, which means the 11hh ends up on his own. Serves him right really but not much fun for him long term!
