Teaching qualifications.

Dd is interested in getting some sort of riding teaching qualification - not as her main job (still completely unsure about that) but as a 'string to her bow" so to speak. She's working towards the Pony Club B test this summer, and already helps teaching the little ones Stable Management. She's 15 - has anyone got any helpful ideas?

UKCC qualifications are the newish coaching qualifications - they are offered by all the main disciplines eg Pony Club, BHS, RDA. They are in addition to the horse care and riding knowledge that you need as evidenced by BHS stages/pony club tests etc. Pony Club will probably offer courses etc for those interested in teaching, their conferences have been good in the past. Can't remember what age you need to be to do UKCC level 1 which is assisttant coach but think it might be only 16 whereas BHS PTT is maybe 18? Sorry not much use but a long way of saying is there is lots she can do whether as a part time interest or to do as job for a time.

ABRS (Association of British Riding Schools) tests can also qualify you as a groom, I believe.

have to have stage 2 for the ptt I think, but maybe she can start on the portfolio now and just do the stages exams once she is 16?

I think if you have your B test you can go straight onto PTT.

Yes you can go straight to BHS PTT if you have your B test!

Hello,

Back when dinosaurs roamed the earth I did my stage 3 and my PTT off my B test. You used to be able to skip to stage 4 stable management and intermediate teaching (i.e. skipping the riding) if you had your A test, not sure if that is still the case, if it is it would be pretty cost effective to do it that way as my 4 cost a flipping fortune. PTT is the teaching of basic good position and riding, common sense and safety - the last two I was told by the chief BHS examiner in the region are the absolute criticals - you can be as charismatic and inspiring as you like but if you do anything wrong safety wise they have to fail you, just something that has stayed with me forever and I always pass on, be paranoid! Sorry, I digress, if the Pony Club will let her help out with the little ones riding too then she should be able to get some experience in before she turns 16? I'm pretty sure I had to do the exam before the portfolio although mine was cut down to 250 hours because I'd been teaching for so long so if she has time on the clock so to speak that the chief instructor of the PC can vouch for then she may be able to do similar.

I've always had teaching/ riding tucked under my belt as an additional/ standby and it has kept me both happy and in work through times when I've needed extra cash or wanted a break from the office and also when things have gone pear shaped so I'd highly reccomend! Way more enjoyable than shovelling the proverbial for folks although come to think of it I've done a fair bit of that..... Sorry for long waffle...
