Do feathers protect from or increase vulnerability to mud fever?

I used someone else's antibacterial cream but only once or twice, am just putting muddy marvel on once a week now and haven't found any new scabs for ages - hair has all grown back, he lives in a total swamp so it is a miracle really, I can see why everyone was so evangelistic about it. Out of the four saddlers/tack shops here only one stocked it and the others hadn't heard of it.

Have washed his legs with Hibiscrub (and they came up bright white which was nice to see), applied Muddy marvel to the offending area (couldn't find any other patches), keratex sulphur talc to all other legs too, and he's having a day in a stable to let it all really dry out before a good spray of 7 day mud away this evening and putting him back out.

Loads of rain last night, so new field actually has puddles in it
