im on DIY. there is a mare there which has terrible fistulated withers, not being treated. It terribly thin - is never fed by the owner, only by the rest of us, is on a bed of shit and is never let out. i have phoned the RSPCA and kicke dup a stink. It is the 3rd call we have made. they just dont seem interested. Not sure what to do next - I might end up trying to buy the horse from the owner - but dont really want another one- not sure what to do next - any ideas

Gutted! You OK?

elastaghoul · 27/10/2010 09:55

Thanks all, we are all a very sad but at least she wont suffer anymore - she was a sweet little thing and really kind.

Just after we put her down the RSPCA rang!!!

The inspector had been on holiday and he is now going to follow up with the vet and previous owner - doubt anything will come of it - its all a bit too late Angry

Horrible, horrible previous owner. Makes me SO mad. Well done you for taking the responsibility. Hope you are OK!

ragged · 27/10/2010 10:47

What a sad story :(.

MassiveKnob · 27/10/2010 10:50

oh my god, was reading through this thread, ready to post about how lovely it was that she had a chance with such a caring owner. Am now so sad that she had to be put down, but quite clearly her suffering had gone on too far.

Previous owner should be taken to court. Hope the RSPCA are informed, that they ignored a suffering animal. By the way, one of the richest charities there are. Makes me Angry People dontate money for just these reasons, and they choose to ignore. They are as bad as the previous owner IMO

Pixel · 27/10/2010 16:44

Poor girl. Sad I'm so glad she got a bit of love and decent food and a spell out in the field before she went. I hope you can take comfort from the fact that you did a lovely thing.

As for the RSPCA, we stopped trusting them years ago and it seems they haven't improved despite all the donations they get Angry. They recently came round my mum's house begging for money but she soon told them what she thought!

Pixel · 27/10/2010 16:45

And Angry to the horse's owner as well obviously. Shame she couldn't be named and shamed so no other unsuspecting person sells her a horse, but it never works like that does it.

GoreRenewed · 27/10/2010 16:45

So sorry to hear that Sad Unbelievable that she was allowed to get so bad.

GoreRenewed · 27/10/2010 16:48

What I don't understand is if she was a good horse why didn't the owner simply sell her ages ago if she couldn't cope. Poor beast.

DD has lost 2 horses this years (the one's she rode for lessons not hers) and was heartbroken each time. Everyone was. How can you let your own animal suffer?

ragged · 28/10/2010 13:54

I can understand why neglect happens, but horses are expensive to acquire and keep; they are assets as much as anything. So why not sell her indeed, why let that asset go to waste?

Butkin · 28/10/2010 14:11

What a terrible outcome but very well done for trying and for being brave enough to do the right thing.

What was her official name? I may be able to research her history for you which may give you some nice memories of her.

I've never supported the RPSCA. They had a shop opposite my office but that has closed down because nobody ever went in it and was hated by many people in the town because of their political stances. They should care more about going out to sort out problems like you described.

The racehorse welfare organisations and World Horse Rescue are more deserving of our cash.

careergirl · 30/10/2010 00:23

Sad but well done for trying and for giving her a few days of good care and a peaceful ending.

Sorry it didn't have a better outcome for you though

lovingthesun · 08/11/2010 21:01

Just read this - so glad you gave that poor horse some love & care & so sorry to hear she couldn't be saved Sad

You did a wonderful thing by helping out.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 15/11/2010 02:17

I am so, so sorry for her and you, imagine how much pain the poor thing has been in. Wish the previous owner could be punished somehow and really worry about what the rest of her horses are like.

On the bright side thank goodness the World has people like you in it, you're a star for taking her on.

Can't believe RSPCA didn't respond, I have a direct debit donation to them for £50 every month...am cancelling and sending a snotty letter as this isn't the first time I've heard they don't respond.

SarahStrattonsSparkler · 22/11/2010 18:49

I'm so so sorry to hear this :(

I just wanted to add. If anyone else ever experiences anything like this the people to call are Trading Standards. They can do spot inspections and actually have the power to take horses away from their owners. Our yard has them regularly, by request of the yard owners. Their take on it is that, provided they are doing their job properly, TS are working to their benefit.

I'm on a fantastic yard. I never knew any of this until the yard owner told me. Ultimately, the owner of the yard is responsible for the horses whether they are DIY or full livery. Your yard owner should have stepped in long ago and sorted this out.

RSPCA are absolutely bloody useless. I've never actually met anyone in RL who has anything good to say about them.

Debs3693 · 29/11/2010 18:19

Hi, I have been following this thread as a horse lover who can't currently ride. I am so sorry to hear about Dottie, but you must take comfort that you did the right thing for her. I would write a formal letter to the RSPCA letting them know as if you contacted them previously and they didn't intervene, i think they need to take some responsibility for this sad story.
