Aargh! Help! What is this horrible reaction?

Help! In follow up to my last post about clipping out my lovely Shetland, I got to her today and found her all puffy and wrinkly! We have seen this three times on three other ponies. The first two were clipped by my friend with her own horse clippers, and I put it down to her not using correct clipper oil. The third was clipped with my clippers,( smaller face/dog trimming type made by oster) using the oil they came with. This time, I used my clippers again, and bought some liveryman clipper oil and clipper wash. There doesn't seem to be a common denominator. They reaction entails loose puffy swelling of the clipped area, which is itchy and as it goes down oozes yellow crusty stuff. The vet isn't overly bothered, and we have given piriton and Epsom salts in the past, and just let it run it's course, it's just really annoying! Anyone else had this problem or have any ideas what caused it?!

Oh dear what a shame after all your hard work. I've never seen anything like that myself (haven't used my clippers for years anyway) but I've found this if it helps.

It may be that the denseness of the ponies coats is causing the clippers to pull on the hair and rip it rather than cutting through it? I've never come across this either, but I would imagine the clippers would work much harder on the thick winter coat of a Sheltie than on a TB say.

They seemed to be going through okay. We did wonder if it was a razor rash type thing. It's just so horrid for them. it itches like crazy!

I've clipped thick-coated ponies as well as my mum's part TB and as long as the blades were sharp and the hair clean there wasn't really a difference in how difficult it was, except the shaggier they were the harder it was to get a straight line! One thing I did notice was that as they got older the skin was looser and it could pull a bit more if you weren't careful to stretch out on certain parts like behind elbows. It just meant the possibility of 'nicking' a wrinkly bit though, not a reaction like you've described.

Totally random! No rhyme or reason to any of them!

Could there be something in the field that has irritated her now that she hasn't got the thick hair for protection?
