Nice way to spend a w/end - NOT! Don't read if you're squeamish!

My dearly beloved boy has been having long term treatment for sarcoids - 4 months and counting. They are in his groin area and it's been a pretty grim experience which I'm not going to put him through again if/when the buggers reappear.

I've been washing it out with saline twice daily and using yellow fly cream on it, and up until now it has been gross but ok, however on Fri evening I found it more than a bit smelly so I started him on antibiotics straight away.

On washing in good light on Sat I discovered maggots - yuk, yuk, yukkity yuk (among other choice words). Not very big, but lots of them so I then spent about an hour flushing them out by using the hosepipe on them, under pressure. My lovely horse just stood there while I squirted water up into his nether regions and all down his legs, I couldn't believe how good he has been.

The vet said to keep going with the washing, antibiotics and fly cream, and that actually as long as there weren't too many, that the maggots would be doing good as they are eating the dead stuff - grim. He's coming out today to check, and with luck he'll cut away what he can and it won't be so bad.

Just thought I'd share that lovely experience with you all - beat that for grossness!

The vet has just been and pulled it off - it was about the size of my hand! It has come away quite cleanly and now we have the long process of hoping it will heal over cleanly and then maybe I'll be able to ride him again. I think I'm looking at another couple of months really, just as it gets cold and unpleasant - typical.

My friends Shetland had maggots in his sheath! He was really hairy and sweaty under there. She had to get right in there with a sponge and disinfectant and clean them out! THats why I like mares!!

Yuk! Until very recently dhorse refused to let us anywhere near his sheath and we've had to have him sedated when it needed cleaning. We've spent all summer being paranoid about fly-strike.

My mum's old horse once had maggots in his hoof. The farrier told us to pour bleach over them.

Pixel · 27/09/2010 23:15

Not suggesting bleach for sheaths obviously!

I have 6 geldings and I swear they all love it when I wash their smelly sheaths, dirty boys.

Frosty the things we do for our darling horses hope he's on the mend soon I know from experience how expensive sarcoid removal is good luck xx
