What size paddock is big enough?

Can you help me please Smile

We have been looking at a property we're interested in buying. The owners have fenced off the bottom of their garden (1/4 of an acre) and built a stable block where they keep their two ponies. They told us they ride most days in the forest.

My question is, is 1/4 acre big enough to use as a paddock for 1 or 2 ponies? They certainly looked well enough but I thought ponies needed more room - or does it depend on whether you have a stable too?

I'm not thinking of buying ponies any time soon (I haven't ridden for some time - not since my pony died when I was a teenager) but this does have a bearing on whether the house is the right one for us or not.

Thank you in advance Smile

I would say that 1/4 of an acre is way too small for even 1 pony. The BHS recommends 1.5 acres for the 1st horse and 1 acre per horse after that. Of course ponies need less and with good management (poo picking every day, rotating paddocks etc) you can manage on much less than 2.5 acres, but 1/4 acre just isn't enough, even with stabling.

Way too small unless you are going to stable them a lot, particularly in winter. The amount of land you need will also depend on the ground conditions ie well drained or clay for example. Also, think about how much hay you would need to buy to supplement the lack of grazing, and hay is crazy prices this year.

It isn't big enough unless the horses were mainly stabled, and had lots of exercise (have known horses to be mainly stabled) but even still they need a good run and play from time to time. Is there any fields to rent nearby that they could be trailered or ridden to and turned out? 1/4 acre sounds OK for maybe an arena or something and a few jumps, and a small runb around paddock, but as the last poster said it's an acre or so for the first and 1 per horse after, also you'de have to think about letting the grass rest etc.

Thing is, you've got ponies maybe being worked a max of once a day. If you shut them up in a small space then they don't keep moving gently about as they do when they graze. It's not the most healthy option. You might be pleased to have sparse grazing in the summer, but in the winter it would be a nightmare I think.

Thank you - you've confirmed what I suspected Smile

The ponies that are currently there are stabled most of the time but are exercised alot. Still not ideal though.

Thanks again!
