Bone infection

This is worst case scenario but no response to anti-biotics, obviously poultices etc so am gearing up for worst possible scenario - stories with more positive outcomes would be so welcome today.

One of my mares had a deep sore that went down to the bone under her jaw - it was like a deep ulcer and the bone around it was raised and in the middle of the ulcer there was no bone IYSWIM. It didn't respond to ABs, I had the vet clean it out many times and I cleaned it religiously twice a day every day. Sometimes it went but it always came back until one day it disappeared for good. It took 4 years.

Good luck.

Sorry Mitchy, have I missed something? (have been away). Who has got a bone infection?

Alicetheinvisible · 16/08/2010 20:39

Have you got more info?

MrFibble · 16/08/2010 20:43

So sorry. Wishing you the best.

If you didn't know I was a real person you'd think I was a troll, but my middle daughter has been in intensive care for a week - just off the ventilator and transferred to a different hospital - so haven't even seen Barney. Vet from Hadleigh has been treating him, it's all from that tiny puncture wound to his sole. All I know is the oral antibiotics didn't work, after the usual attempts to drain all the gunk it just kept coming. Vet dug it out, abcess further up. Intravenous antibiotics. Have hardly spoken to anyone about his care, had a little flat in the hospital to stay in just down the corridor from intensive care and could only think about my daughter. Although someone brought me h&h last Thurs and just couldn't bear to read it.

So I don't know much, but now daughter is more stable I need to face up to it all. I need more information don't I?

Mitchy Sad what a horrid time you have all been having. Really hope DD is doing ok, am i right that this is an ongoing situation?

DH read your post last night and said that if infection in the joint = not good, but if in the middle of a bone much more positive. See what you can find out and i might be able to get some advice/something comforting to tell you Smile

Please take care of yourself in all of this (big hugs)

MitchyInge · 17/08/2010 10:46

Thank you so much. It's unbearable, the idea that this might be untreatable - how do they get antibiotics into a bone? I understand how blood might carry them to a source of injection, but bones are dense and solid? How can such a tiny wound become such a nightmare? I really can't imagine a life without him in it, or even him never being sound again.

Daughter had a seizure, bit out of the blue (but yes, she is the one who has been giving me grey hairs for a while now) and aspirated - developed pneumonia from that. Is still poorly but not in danger.

I think you need to find out more from your vet. I know it may be hard to hear, but you will be in a better position to make any decisions after speaking to your vet. Will keep everything crossed for you Smile

Oh Mitchy, so sorry you are going through all this. Sad Glad to hear your dd is out of danger though. My sister used to have grand mal epilepsy so I know how frightening seizures can be.

And poor old Barney, I hope you can get some news soon.

MrFibble · 19/08/2010 10:55

How are you doing Mitchy? Hope DD OK and Barney is improving.

Thinking of you.
