What did you do when you left teaching?

I am basically being bullied out of teaching by the senior leadership team. It’s being dealt with by the union and I am currently thinking of my next steps. Everything is still raw, but right now I do not think I want to go back in the classroom.

If you left teaching, what role did you go into? Was it a massive pay drop? I am the main breadwinner so pay is a very big factor in any decisions I make.

Or was it the right decision for you to carry on teaching?

I’m leaving headship this year after 19 years - was going to retire but decided to take on a part time role working in the same trust - coaching, supporting and advising schools…
It is obviously a pay cut but I’m looking forward to having flexibility!

A few teachers who have left over the years have gone into different careers - IT, Science, Technology, Engineering.
Business Managers etc…
it all depends what you want to do.

Thank you for your reply.

If I had to make a wish list I think it would include not being stuck at a desk all day, flexible working with the option to work at home some days. I don’t mind learning new skills but would like to use some transferable skills.

If I’m honest, I just don’t know what is out there.

I retired last year and initially trained as a speed awareness trainer but just didn't like those 9 faces staring at me over Zoom. So, I decided to have a go at supply. I choose my year groups and only work 2-3 days a week (I actually limit it to 2 if I can) usually Tuesday/Wed or Wed/Thur and that tops up my pension nicely.

Obviously if you have to replace a fulltime teaching wage that's going to be trickier.

There are very active Facebook groups which discuss this regularly (not sure if links are allowed). I’m afraid DH earns many times my part-time salary so I’ve basically “retired”, even though I’m a bit young for it. Other jobs don’t have enough leave for me.
